Il primo film della “Trilogia del Dollaro” (1964) di Sergio Leone, interpretato da Clint Eastwood, ha dato fama mondiale al suo regista ma anche al compositore della sua colonna sonora. E non a torto, perché la musica che l’allora 36enne Ennio Morricone, nonostante le iniziali titubanze del regista, ha composto per “Per un pugno di dollari” è un torrente creativo ancora ineguagliato…
I due si trovarono subito d'accordo su quali tematiche e su quale effetto doveva avere la musica sul film. A parere di Leone l'ideale sarebbe stato iniziare a lavorare alla musica contemporaneamente alla scrittura della sceneggiatura, per avere una maggiore influenza sulla caratterizzazione delle scene e dei personaggi.
Nonostante il successo internazionale della colonna sonora, che è associata all'intero genere western, Morricone non l'apprezza particolarmente; secondo il compositore, infatti, “Per un pugno di dollari” è il peggior film di Leone e la peggior colonna sonora che abbia mai fatto.

Despite the international success of the soundtrack, which is associated with the entire western genre, Morricone not particularly appreciate; according to the composer, in fact, "A Fistful of Dollars" is the worst movie of Leone and the worst score I've ever done.
