Felony Flats is one of those DJs who finds the common thread between tunes where you wouldn’t believe there was one, managing to build cohesive sets from disparate materials. Despite his young age (20) he’s travelled all the genres from black metal to new rave and beyond; what makes his sets work so well is this very open mindedness. He’s not about to ignore a tune just because it sold a few million copies, and when he drops that half remembered hit from MTV at peak time on a packed dancefloor like a bomb you may suddenly realise why it did.



Hip hop is basically at the heart of his approach. He’s taken the time to travel the dead ends and side alleys in that most expansive of global musics digging for gems, and it’s a hip hop approach to the decks that gives him the tools to bring his knowledge and sonic travels together into banging dancefloor sets, rapid mixing multiple sources, many streams making a river. Despite the fact that he’s generally into a new sound every few months or so, somehow he always ends up sounding like himself, and this is a very good and rare thing. Basically, he’s one of those DJs whose sets don’t scream “you must listen hard and think about what I’m playing”. He focuses on keeping you dancing. But if you do stop dancing for a second, you’d find there’s plenty to think on indeed.
