MODERN ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC POP INTERACTING WITH THE CLASSICAL MUSIC TRADITION, THE HARMONICS OF JAZZ AND THE ENERGY OF ROCK.

Epicentre’s debut-album “Fokus” is a mix of pompous and small-scaled songs that are all connected in the same modern electronic and classical music style.

Epicentre is a young Danish band that counts six members playing cornet, violin, cello, rhodes, piano, drums, percussion, bass and several different keyboards and synthesizers.

The music is modern electro-acoustic pop interacting with the classical music tradition, the harmonics of jazz and the energy of rock. The Danish lyrics play an important role in the music that is centred on a female lead-vocal, which is accompanied by contrastive male vocals. It is beat-compositions with roots in medieval folk music. Catchy melodies are used focused and tastefully in an epic and adventurous sound-universe with choir, horns and strings, but at the same time in a minimalistic and aesthetically pleasing expression.

**** GAFFA (DK)

Pelle Sonne Lohmann wrote:

"In genre the pop-passages merge with bombastic periods of classical music, as the music also squint at jazz and folk-music. At occasions the result is intoxicating, and the sometimes-gloomy lyrics are not bad either."

"Take for instance the orchestration, that through the record is extremely versatile and overall looking back in time in a generally modern sound-spectre…"

"Overall the record though is an impressively ambitious one…"

**** SOUNDVENUE (DK)

Jeppe Krogsgaard Christensen wrote:

"Naïve and varied, chucking and coherent, grandiose and intimate. These may seem like contrasts, but with danish band Epicentre the 10 compositions are so spacious that there is room for it all."

"The ambitiuos band succed on the album in merging jazz, pop, electronica, classical music and folk in a way, that is both bitter and sweet. The album ressembles generally a mix between Efterklang, Tys Tys and Múm, and one must inevitably be impressed by the variety of instruments the band manages to handle."

"Lyrically Epicentre possesses a certain poetic power."

". the electro-acoustic orchestra is on the sound-track of something interesting, and "Fokus" is not just a fascinating work, but also a bright promise for the future."

**** MIDTJYLLANDS AVIS (DK)

Christian Kloch Larsen wrote:

"A COUNTERCURRENT TO MAINSTREAM"

""Fokus" is a very sensational album. Not just because the six bandmembers in Epicentre are extremely young - just 18-20 year. But because the debut-album is so different, convincing and consummate."

"An electro-acoustic countercurrent to the mainstream that usually is published."

"In general "Fokus is a music work where both meaningless words and crooked rythms join together and form a synthesis. A brave, beautiful and promising debut."

DISKANT (DK)

Morten Wamsler wrote:

“It is rare one hears anything that resembles just an inch of Danish Epicentre.”

“They describe the music themselves as “modern electro-acoustic pop interacting with classical music tradition, the harmonics of jazz and the energy of rock”. At first these are bombastic words, but actually they hold water and in many of the albums facets very well.”

“The music moves in all kinds of musical directions and the combination of electronic spheres and brass- and stringarrangements is delicate and nicely matched.”

“The vocals are at times shrill and filled with madness and that contributes in giving Epicentre a façade of something “primitive”-like. Something troll-like in which an electronic robot-head sticks out of an ancient forest with gnarled trees and prehistoric animals.”

“… the lyrics are also a central part of the peculiar acquaintance of Epicentre and the lyrics hereby contributes to giving “Fokus” that distinctive character so you just cannot do anything but like it.”

“… there are a lot of interesting and unheard stuff to lose oneself in, if one has the courage to listen to something completely different than anything heard before.”

“On tracks like “Fisk” an original and peculiar universe is created and manifests life on new musical planets.”
