The forthcoming release -NEVER FORGET - is coming soon!
All true music lovers long for those rare, invaluable occasions when an artist emerges who can speak straight to them. And when that call can only be answered by sounds full of freshness and youth, sometimes it takes a teen. That's something we've been shown by the rise to pop prominence of everyone from Avril Lavigne to Taylor Swift. And that's the way it is with Emily, a 17-year-old singer/songwriter who follows her artistic path with unbridled passion, never stopping to think about meeting any kind of minimum age requirement. "I've always known this was what I wanted, ever since I was a little kid. It's in my soul," she says of her singing career.
Believe it or not, Emily has already logged a number of years working at her craft. She began writing and recording some of the oldest songs on her debut album, Out The Window, when she was just 12 years old. Her talent developed in an organic way -- "When I was just a toddler, my mom loved these big, heart-wrenching songs and we would always sing them together in the car or in the kitchen," she recalls. Before long, she was exploring her own tastes, bopping around her bedroom singing along to everything from the aforementioned Avril to Taylor Dayne and Toni Braxton. The writing side of her gifts came just as naturally to Emily. "I started writing poetry as soon as I learned to write, at about 5 years old," she explains. It wasn't long before the precocious young poet was penning her own tunes, and by the time she was 12, she impressed producer/music-biz-veteran Larry King -- no, not that Larry King -- so much that he began working with her on what would eventually become Out The Window. Sessions for the record began at the legendary Capitol studios in L.A., where King called upon the cream of the crop for backing musicians, including bassist Leland Sklar, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and guitarist Michael Thompson, who between them have recorded with a staggering array of stars, including Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Phil Collins, Sting, Celine Dion, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Justin Timberlake, Faith Hill, and countless other musical giants. Emily is a self-sufficient songwriter, who envisions the entire arrangement for a song in her head while she's working on it, but King nevertheless helped her create something in the studio that went beyond what she'd imagined on her own. "He always points me in the right direction," Emily observes, adding that through their working relationship, King has become like family to her.
The mix of influences Emily brings to Out The Window is a varied one; besides her passion for pop, she's a classically trained singer who has extensive experience with featured roles in everything from theater productions to opera, and on a personal level she is inspired by a disparate batch of artists including Whitney Houston and quirky indie-pop innovator Imogen Heap. She combines this unique set of inspirations with an individualist's approach to making music. "I just write whatever I feel, and if it doesn't work, I'll just kind of make it work," she reveals. "I'll try and try until I get it right." And when she puts that kind of determined drive to work, the results can bring the listener to any number of unexpected places, from the infectious dance grooves and empowering message of liberation on "Let Yourself Go" to the gritty, gutsy, alt-rock attack of "Covered," and the poignant sadness inhabiting "Embers," the kind of undeniable power ballad it's easy to imagine appealing to audiences in pop, rock, or even country. While the giddy rush of young love Emily embodies on "Thinkin' About You" -- echoed in the effervescent flow of the music -- is a reminder of the youthful freshness that's part of her appeal, it's difficult to reconcile the melodic sophistication and emotional intensity of "Enough" with the fact that it's one of her earliest efforts -- which means she wrote it at the age of 12!
Emily is savvy enough to realize that youth can be a double-edged sword. "I think it can be a disadvantage because people think that you're more naive than is true," she assesses, but adds "Young people bring something new and fresh to audiences. I would hope that kids my age and hopefully older audiences could enjoy my music." In fact, she's already got a strikingly mature perspective on making a life in music. "I think the most important thing about being a successful musician is great artistry," she asserts. "Having great vocal ability is a major factor, but a true artist is versatile, able to entertain and put on a show, relatable to his or her audience, and original." In fact, connecting to listeners is at the top of the list for Emily. "Most of my songs are written from my own personal experiences, or as the observer of friends' experiences," she reveals. "I write so that others will know that there are people going through the same thing; they're not alone."
It's no surprise to learn that the ambitious young recording artist is setting her sights on new horizons now that she's bringing her music to a wider audience than ever before with the release of the seven-song Out The Window. For the future, Emily is looking forward to more live performances and more recording, and is cultivating her skills in recording technology, production techniques, and advanced music theory. Judging from all she's accomplished up to now, it's impossible to doubt her when she says "I'm aiming to do it all." In the meantime, Out The Window offers both Emily and her growing audience an opportunity to make exciting new discoveries. "I'm realizing that I can do just what I want," she says. "This is the music that I want to make, and it doesn't have to be all dance tunes, upbeat all the time -- I can slow down, write what I want. My style's definitely evolving," observes Emily, sounding justifiably proud upon adding the prediction "and it will only get better with age."
