Simple et efficace, le morceau s’appelait Babylone. Signé KING ELSY, il faisait il y a quelque mois le bonheur de sélecteurs en quête de productions francophones de qualité. En face B, le mélodica cut s’avérant à la hauteur, on attendait au tournant Uplift, le label qui l’avait sorti… cf (Natty Dread.Oct-Nov 2004).
Simple et efficace : c’est bien ça. Le King balance, de sa voix tantôt brûlante, tantôt chatoyante, des lyrics fermement engagés dans la lutte contre le systeme oppresseur et en faveur de la foie Rastafari, au coeur de laquelle notre homme trouve toute sa fondation.
C’est en Martinique, terre natale, qu’il connait ses premières vibrations musicales : tout jeune, il allait aux côtés de sa mère chanter pour la chorale de l’Eglise. Grandissant aux rythmes des musique Caribéennes, il ne passe bien sûr pas à côté de la vague des années 70 déferlant sur les ondes Marley, Tosh, Wailer, Miller… le tout ponctué de sonorités afro-cubaines.
A 15 ans il est membre d’un groupe de percussions, avec lequel il joue dans les écoles, lors de fêtes de villages et autres manifestations. Fréquemment en contact avec des frères Rastafari, c’est tout naturellement pendant ce temps qu’il développe son esprit et ses vibrations sous cette influence. Arrive ensuite le flot entrainant des chanteurs de reggae Créoles auquel il ne résiste pas. Daddy Yod, Pablo Master, Général Muffy, Supa John… déchirent sur les ondes, motivant leurs frères antillais à s’adonner eux aussi à l’expression francophonie du reggae. L’Anglais n’est plus tout puissant. Aussi commence t-il dès lors lui aussi à donner de la voix.
KING ELSY est à l’origine de la fondation de plusieurs sound-systems, tels que Dynamique Massive à Paris dans les années 80, ou Jah Guide sound-system pour lequel il endosse la triple fonction de sélecteur, MC et chanteur.
Fort de ces expériences Parisiennes, Elsy retourne aux Antilles animé du désir de fonder une structure musicale rastafari solide. C’est alors qu’il rejoint la congrégation Gwana Congo, au sein de laquelle il s’affaire à monter un sound, d’abord nommé Kingly Character sound system ; aujourd’hui il s‘agit du sound system Total Recall.
Toujours animé par le désir d’avoir une organisation solide et de bonnes fondations dans tout ce qu’il entreprend, c’est avec une continuelle ardeur et dans une foie sans faille que ce frère avance dans son amour de la musique, source essentielle de vie et d’énergie, ceci en dépit des maintes tribulations qui ont pu croiser la route de ce rastaman Roots & Call Jah.

“Simple and effective" : it is indeed that. King rocks, in its voice sometimes ardent, sometimes brilliant, lyrics firmly engaged in the fight against the system oppressor and in favour of Rastafarian liver, in the heart of which our man finds all his foundation.
It is in Martinique, native earth, that he knows his first musical vibrations: very young, he went beside his mother to sing for the choir of the Church. Daddy Yod, Pablo Master, General Muffy, Supa John. tear on the waves, motivating their West-Indian brothers to also devote itself them to the francophonized expression of the reggae. KING ELSY is at the origin of the foundation of several sound-systems, such as “Dynamique Massive” in Paris in the Eighties, or “Kingly Character sound-system” for which it endorses triples it function of selector, MC and singer.
