Studio Commandments!

:

Drummers

THOU SHALL PLAY WITH A CLICK OR TEMPO TRACK, ALWAYS. If you cannot play with one, YOU WILL BE SENT HOME.

Thou shall not smack the drums while the engineer's ear is 1' from the cymbals.

Thou shall change your drum heads and have all the squeek's and grunts out of the kit.

Thou shall NOT say nothing when you see a mic has moved

Thou shall not hum or sing the song or make a bunch of noises while tracking that normally fall under the radar live

Guitar Players

Thou shall change the strings on all your guitars A WEEK BEFORE RECORDING and have your INTONATION set.

Thou shall not come in with a half beat up Piece Of Shit of an amp and expect to sound like (insert your favorite band here).

Bass Players

See guitar Players

Vocalists

Thou shall not play pocket pool with a pocket full of change while doing vocal tracks

Thou shall remove any noisy jewelry before tracking

The whole band

Thou shall not go out and party your brains out the night before the session

Thou shall not bring a bunch of groupies into the studio

Thou shall let the last chord fade down before somebody gets impatient and ruins a perfectly good ending

Thou shall keep your cell phones out of the recording room

Thou shall be careful of the "dude that was awesome" mentality. Nothing wrong with support but I've just seen many mediocre takes left because you have a group of guys circle jerking each other instead of listening objectively.

Thou shall be well rehearsed and have some real idea of what you sound like live, just because you rocked a club full of drunken dancers doesn't mean the rest of the world will react like that.

Thou shall not get so caught up in the "you can fix it right?" mentality that it makes you lazy. The engineer can fix it but a lot of times it turns out better if you play or sing it right.
