DOM ALMOND "NIGHTMARES" by Dom Almond

Dom Almond has been involved in dance music since the early Nineties when he was inspired by the scratch DJ’s and turntablists of the Hip Hop scene and the dirty groove of Electro, it wasn’t long before he wanted a piece of the action. Dom dedicated years to developing his art and has amounted a mass of technical skills. Renown for his mixing trickery Dom is more than adept at cutting things up, adding his own style to a set.

Dom got into the Old Skool scene playing at the legendary Sanctury and for the 4th dimension crew in Oxford.

As his reputation grew Dom further developed his mixing skills, resulting in him coming runner up in the Muzik magazine bedroom bedlam competition in 1999, only beaten to the post by the then unknown Yousef.

As his DJ skills developed it was only a matter of time before he turned his hand to producing and became a name in the hard house scene of the late 90’s. His first release came courtesy of Elasticman records under the name Dom Demure, and he was a favorite among hard house DJs like Lisa Lashes and illogic (who also provided remixes of Dom’s track “Keep The Rhythm Rocking”)

As his music taste developed and the hard house scene became commercial Dom turned back to his Hip Hop and Electro roots, elements of which were beginning to be served up together with the beginnings of the breakbeat scene. Dom began carving up fat breaks with grimy electro and funk driven house. He met Jonny Sessions, and became one of the first residents of what is now one of the major names in the breaks scene.

His 4 year residency with Sessions has seen him play alongside the cream of international artists, including the Audio Bully's, Plump DJ's, Stanton Warriors, Seb Fontaine, Eric Prydz, Tim Deluxe, Mutiny, Wayout West, Evil 9, Annie Mac, Adam Freeland, Freestylers, Pendulum, Seb Fontaine, Circulation Savers, MYNC Project, Switch, Futureshock, Steve Angelo and Nic Warren. Having to warm up for, or indeed in many cases follow, a whose who of dance over the years and ensured that Dom has firmly left his mark, and the mark is starting to grow.

Dom now has an array of experience behind him and his most recent productions have been making some waves, recent release on Erase Records “Shake It” reached number 4 in the Dj download breaks chart and recieved 4 and 1/2 out of five in djmag. With signings to Erase records, Voodoo Vinyl, Big Licks Digital and remixing for labels such as Rexhouse Records and Systematica Records Dom continues to carve out a name for himself. Doms remix of Mark Sun’s “Dawnlight” on Jack Digitals won him a much coveted set at The Gallery, Turnmills.

With his DJ diary getting fuller by the day and new residency at Beatcheck in Milton Keynes with names such as Soul of Man, A Skillz, FreeStylers, Drumattic Twins, Ali b, Stanton Warriors, Slyde and not forgetting breaks poll winners Groove Diggerz headlining it seems it won’t be long before his name is one that goes hand in hand with quality underground dance at its best.

If that’s not enough to keep him busy Dom is also a member of A Dominant Species with Anya and Special A, with support and radio play coming from both Jay Cunning (Kiss FM) and DJ Icey. They have a releases on L3 Records and Brains Kans Recordings and forthcoming releases on Mechanoise Records and Streetwise records.

"Twisted by name, twisted by nature . this tune tears the dancefloor to bits oh my days!!!"~ Breakfastaz.

"Dom Almond is definitely a talent to watch in the breaks scene -his music understands the soul of breaks, and the fact that to reach a wider audience breaks tracks have to have the funk and be accessible."Shake It" has these qualities and enough original sonics to make it a stand out track -play with confidence!" ~Jez - Utah Saints.

"I’ve been keeping a close eye on Dom Almonds productions for the last 3 months, and this tune is the reason why.

I love the vocal on this track although im not over keen on full vocals in breaks, this one works really well. The bass is one of Doms Dirty dog basslines that you just gotta shake your booty to, overall a top top tune, I played it at herbal on Saturday night and it rocked the dancefloor.

8/10" ~ Rob Savage Groove Diggerz

"'Shake it' is an interesting release for Erase Records.

With a Miami-bass inspired groove, cuts and scratches featuring some sick bass, this track feels a full female vocal, which seems like a slight novelty for a breaks track, but perhaps thats becouse there arent enough of them.Anyway, whatever Dom's been eating lately has obviously been going down well becouse this track is Phat, with big gnarly bass and moody stabs, this is dirty breaks for dirty boys and girls. The Drum Monkeys deliver the remix on the flip and take things in a dub-skanking,low-end wobbling direction, which is all good and offers a decentakternative to the Original mix.The vocal sits better in the mix and its got a nasty, moody vibe, which reminds me of the good old D&B days of yester year" ~ Tom Real- M8 Review
