It was a dark and stormy night in 1803 and an Irish convict named Patrick James Donlon sat on the prisoners deck of a ship bound for New Holland. Sentenced to life in a penal colony for stealing sheet music, Pat kept morale high by making tunes with whatever he could find lying about and watched his fellow "passengers" dance a jig, briefly forgetting their troubles.

Over 200 years later this legacy has passed down through generations of music making Donlons. As part of the age-old birthright, it has been prophesised that there will be a chosen one, touched with extraordinary musical gifts and the drive to create divine music which compels all to move to it. Today, that man is Patrick J Donlon the Tenth, or, as he is known by his followers, DJ Spacey Space.

Spending his formative years in the small Victorian country town of Drouin, Spacey refused to speak English, preferring to communicate through his own special language based on the sounds of nature which he mimicked from birth.

By his teenage years, Spacey had left the language of nature behind, educating himself in the theoretical and practical applications of modern music and found the country sorely lacked the kind of tunes he craved. This lead to a temporary but severe psychologically induced hearing condition. With symptoms similar to tinnitus, Spacey would hear a nasty ringing if he was deprived of the music he craved. This ailment was successfully treated when Spacey discovered city-based radio shows playing hip hop and electronic dance music. Thus began extensive recordings when, armed with a double tape deck, he entered into a trance like state taping hours and hours of mixed compilation tapes from PBS and other independent radio stations.

Spacey Space started playing records and getting paid for it in 1993 at a weekly club night called ‘Bud Dub Loves Loops’ at Lounge in Melbourne’s CBD. The night was a chilled, mid-week affair where you could hear Detroit techno, arty electronica, ambient dub and ancient Jamaican reggae mixed up with film scores, rap music and electro funk. ‘Bud Dub’ enjoyed cruisey success for about a year but Spacey was itching to get the floor moving, so he got some decks, learned to mix and the rest is Dance Music History.

First parties, then clubs, soon the word got out and Spacey was hosting his own radio show Space Station on the original Kiss 90FM. Space Station allowed him to play tracks that were too deep or too twisted for the dance floor and the experimental programming attracted a loyal cult following. The magic lasted four years and recorded tapes of the show are now considered collectables - a fact reflected by the prices they reach when auctioned on e-bay.

Since this time, Spacey Space has partied in the hotel rooms of most of the big touring acts, including Schoolly D, Frankie J Holden, and Silver Convention. And played records as here and there as well.

The word ‘chaos’ in Latin means ‘space’ and is defined as: the shapeless mass out of which the universe was made. Anyone who has been privileged to hear the musical genius of Spacey Space understands why - new worlds are created, time ceases to exist, reality and fantasy become one and there is only you and the sounds and the Space.
