DISTRESS was formed in late 2003 by four punks who have previously played in various local bands. Inspired by work of the bands in the second wave of British punk such as DISCHARGE and VARUKERS and mixing it with Scandinavian punk like ANTI-CIMEX, DISARM, AVSKUM, the band has turned towards raw and dirty dispunk as early as their first rehearsals. In early 2004 two demos, "Fuck The System" and "Propaganda," were recorded. Towards the end of 2004 the original drummer left. For a while the band was inactive. In early 2005 six songs for the split CD with punk band KOMATOZ were recorded, with a new drummer. The recording session was followed by yet another lineup
change. The guitarist quit but soon his place was taken over by a new musician. During that year the band played a number of gigs around Russia and toured Scandinavia twice. The first full-length album "Progress / Regress" has been recorded in early 2006 and released on CD in 2007 by Totalpunk Records. The sound has remarkably switched towards Swedish
d-beat / scandicore on this album. Several songs from the same session were released on a split EP with Finland's DISKELMA. The tour of Czech Republic in the Summer of 2006 was preceded by appearance of a new drummer and followed by the addition of a second guitarist.
The band has started 2007 with a new lineup. New guitarist and bassist - both also members of grind band E.V.A. - have joined. In the Summer of 2007 the band went on a European tour (Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Netherlands). During the tour DISTRESS played at two large open air festivals, Obscene Extreme in Czech Republic and Yellow Dog Fest in Germany. Immediately following the tour five tracks for a split CD with Finland's WHEEL OF DHARMA were recorded. It's not released yet.
This recording has shown the turn towards Scandinavian d-beat / crust scene with even more clarity.
Fall 2007:
After recording the split CD tracks one of the guitar players quit the band. A former member has rejoined for a minitour of Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Finland) but due to visa problems all the gigs were cancelled. The consulate refused visas to two of the band members. Following various internal problems the band has stopped its activity.
But that's not the end yet. To be continued.
(We want to apologise and thank all of our friends who helped with gigs for this tour. Thanks to all of you. The fucking visa system is often a big problem for us as well as many other bands. But we shall not surrender, we shall fight and continue).
2008 - 2009:
In the last two years, day by day, month by month we were doing gigs for ourselves and our friends. In late 2008 we have finally completed the work on tracks for split CD with SUBURBAN SHOWDOWN from the US. The recording was done in early 2007 by our old lineup. The CD was released in late 2008 by SUBTERRANEAN RECORDS (US) and reissued in 2009 on TOTALPUNK RECORDS / HEADNOSE RECORDS. During 2009 we have undertaken two EU tours, both with our friends ESKATOLOGIA from Sweden and the latter also with our drunken mates DISKELMA from Finland. and that was bloody great. After that we have recorded five new tracks for a split ten-inch with ESKATOLOGIA. This piece of vinyl would be released in 2010 on HALVFABRIKAT RECORDS (Sweden).
We thank all the labels and people who helped us and believed in us. We highly appreciate your help and support. Thanks to everybody who did shows for us. and all the people who gave us food, beers, drinks and a good night's sleepcheers!!!
