Dirotta Su Cuba / Rossano Gentili

Il viaggio nella canzone di ROSSANO GENTILI comincia nel 1989. La passione per la black music, nei suoi risvolti jazz e soul, genere poco praticato al tempo, lo porta a fondare i DIROTTA SU CUBA assieme a Stefano De Donato. Il gruppo partecipa a numerosi contest a livello nazionale. Immediato e sorprendente è l'interesse di stampa e pubblico.



Nel 1990, l'inserimento in pianta stabile di Simona Bencini, ridefinisce gli obiettivi dei Dirotta Su Cuba, ormai pronti al grande salto.



Nell'estate 1994 Gelosia diventa un super hit in tutte le radio, trascinando prepotentemente l'album di debutto DIROTTA SU CUBA (uscito nel '95) in quelle zone di alta classifica da cui si allontanerà solo molti mesi più tardi con in tasca il disco di platino. Grazie al successo di brani come Liberi di liberi da o Solo baci, il lavoro indica una via italiana all'acid jazz su cui negli anni a venire si incammineranno diversi artisti e gruppi. Il successo radiofonico è tale da stimolare la pubblicazione di ben cinque singoli.



La passione dei Dirotta per la musica e il desiderio di spingere la propria ricerca verso nuovi traguardi sta alla base dell'album NONOSTANTE TUTTO, prodotto come il precedente da Pierpaolo D'Emilio. Il disco è realizzato con una quarantina di musicisti, tra cui la sezione fiati di Demo Morselli e un'intera orchestra d'archi. Sensibilità, Ridere, Tribù riflettono lo spirito "positive thinking" dei Dirotta, valore che il gruppo ha la possibilità di ribadire in quei party dall'euforia contagiosa in cui si trasformano i concerti del tour che ne segue.



Il 1997 vede la formazione fiorentina al Festival di Sanremo con È andata così al fianco di una leggenda del jazz, l'armonicista Toots Thielemans. L'esperienza serve da pretesto per la raccolta antologica È andata così, in cui figura come secondo inedito anche una cover doc: Jesahel dei Delirium, da sempre acclamatissimo cavallo di battaglia nei concerti.



Nel 2000 esce il loro quarto lavoro Dentro ad ogni attimo, album più maturo dove il trio fiorentino attraverso il linguaggio del funky e del soul esplora generi e mondi sonori diversi. Programmatissimi dalle radio sono i singoli Bang!, chiaro omaggio al mondo di J. Bond, e Notti d'estate; cammei sono il flamenco di In riva al mare e Piove in duetto con Mario Rosini. Alla fine del tour seguito all'uscita dell'album Stefano De Donato lascia il gruppo.



Tra la fine del 2001 e l'inizio del 2002 il gruppo è di nuovo al lavoro per FLY, quinto album dei Dirotta Su Cuba da cui vengono estratti i singoli Sono qui e la title-track Fly. Segue un lungo giro di concerti per l'Italia che segnerà anche l'ultima esperienza di Simona Bencini con il gruppo per intraprendere una carriera solista.



All'inizio del 2004 prende forma il nuovo corso dei Dirotta su Cuba. Il gruppo intraprende un lungo tour in una formazione multi-featuring con 4 vocalist e 8 musicisti.



Durante questo tour emerge prepotentemente la voce e lenergia di Marquica, la strepitosa vocalist dei nuovi Dirotta. Ventiquattro anni, golosa di dolci e strictly vegetarian, Marquica ha un talento esplosivo e un fascino in grado di ammaliare anche un sasso.



Dopo il tour, Rossano lavora incessantemente sul nuovo sound dei Dirotta, cercando di creare un mix equilibrato di tradizione e modernità. Ispirati dalle grandi voci del jazz anni '50 e '60 come Ella Fitzgerald e Billie Holiday, e dalla grande Mina degli anni '60, la nuova formazione ricrea un intero nuovo immaginario sonoro in cui si cala con grande stile ed eleganza.



JAZ è la primo album che ha segnato questa svolta musicale. È un disco pieno d'ispirazione, elegante, dal groove naturale e disinvolto. Un disco, tra l'altro, che è uscito per JAZZET la nuova etichetta discografica creata da Rossano, la cui principale attività consiste nello scovare e crescere nuove realtà artistiche laddove il pop si fonde con generi musicali "nobili", come ad esempio il jazz o il soul.



Alla fine del tour 2007, Rossano inizia a lavorare con Stefano De Donato ad un progetto di rivisitazione in chiave Funky delle più belle canzoni della musica italiana. Il risultato è mix particolarissimo di grande effetto e coinvolgimento.

All'inizio della primavera 2008 la decisione di inserire il progetto nel Live Act dei Dirotta.

Nasce il "Superfunkystation Tour 2008" In cui la band capitanata da Rossano Gentili, nove elementi di cui due voci con il ritorno di Stefano De Donato al basso, rilegge alla luce del sound tanto caro ai Dirotta canzoni che vanno da "Il cielo in una stanza" a "Certe notti" passando da "La mia banda Suona il rock", insomma, la storia della musica italiana secondo i Dirotta su Cuba!

ROSSANO GENTILI's journey into the World of Music started in 1989. His passion for black music especially jazz and soul, genre still uncommon in Italy at the time, led him together with Bass player Stefano de Donato, to found Dirotta su Cuba. The band's stage performance for several musical competitions immediately captured the attention of the press and the public.



In 1990, the arrival of lead singer Simona Bencini, helped to focus the group's priorities, allowing them to make the great leap forward.



Spring 1994: Gelosia became an immediate hit on all radio stations, launching their first album DIROTTA SU CUBA (released in 1995), into the charts where it remained in the top ten for many months, gaining a platinum record.

Thanks to successful tracks such as Liberi di liberi da or Solo baci, their work resulted in an authentic Italian approach to Acid Jazz, which combined lyrics and melody to underline an aggressive funk beat. This formula was to be used by several other Italian groups in the years that followed. The large success into national radio stations is such to push the publication of five singles.



The group's passion for music and the desire for new achievements led to the release of a new album: NONOSTANTE TUTTO, produced by Pierpaolo d'Emilio. The album is realized with the involvement of forty musicians including the participation of Demo Morselli Brass Band and an entire string orchestra. Tracks such as Sensibilità, Ridere and Tribù reflect Dirotta's "positive thinking", the same euphoric energy spread during their live performances.



In 1997 the Band took part in one of Italy's biggest musical contests: the Festival di Sanremo where they were supported by a Jazz legend, the harmonica player Toots Thielemans, and performed the track that was to become the title of their anthological collection: È ANDATA COSI. The collection featured previous successes and an historical Italian cover of Ivano Fossati's Delirium Jesahel, a milestone in Italy's musical history.



In the year 2000 their fourth album DENTRO AD OGNI ATTIMO was released. It was their most mature work to date, where the Tuscany trio explored diverse genres and different world sounds. The single Bang!, clearly a tribute to the world of James Bond, and Notti d'estate were popularized, thanks to extensive coverage by national radio stations. After a long summer tour, Stefano De Donato decided to leave the group.



From the end of 2001 to the beginning of 2002, the group returned to the studio to work on FLY, the fifth album for Dirotta su Cuba from which came singles, Sono qui and the title-track Fly. A long concert tour of Italy followed, which also marked the last time Simona Bencini was to tour with the group before leaving to pursue a career as soloist.



At the beginning of 2004, Dirotta su Cuba adapted a new course. The group embarked on a long tour, taking along with them 4 vocalists and 8 accompanying musicians.



During this tour, the voice and energy of Marquica emerged. Marquica, the overpoweringly talented lead singer of the new Dirotta line-up, is a sweet-toothed, but strictly vegetarian twenty-four year old. She has an explosive talent and a stage presence that would leave any audience breathless.



After the tour, Rossano and Marquica worked incessantly on Dirotta's new sound, trying to create a balanced mix of tradition and modernism. Inspired by the great jazz voices of the '50s and '60s such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Italy's legendary Mina. The new line-up created an entirely new and original sound which was characterized by great elegance and style.



L'Iguana was the first song to result from this musical re-shuffle. The refrain of this first single came from an idea that Rossano had had in the back of his mind since the early days of Dirotta. However, now that Rossano was the producer, his vision was freed to bring forth a perfect mix of big band sound and new millennium rhythms.



JAZ is an album distinguished by inspiration, elegance and intelligence, that all rest perfectly on natural and easy grooves. This album will also carry the label of the new recording company JAZZET created by Rossano, whose principle activity now consists of discovering and establishing a new artistic genre where pop is combined with "noble" musical genres, such as jazz and soul.
