KIAORA!!!! Welcome to myspace for Davey Porter im a drummer from Melbourne Australia i was born in Castor Bay, Auckland New Zealand of (MAORI) desent(NGHAPUHI TRIBE) in 1968 , I Started banging pots & pans from age 5yrs in otara until i got my first kit from my uncle at about age 10yrs which only lasted two weeks then mysteriously went missing,I migrated to Melbourne/Australia in 1979 with my parents (ALEC & JUNE PORTER)brothers (RANI & CARL PORTER)

Music started for me when i used to hear uncles & relatives singing at partys mostly (MAORI) songs in awsome harmony & natural rythym & first hearing sounds of (BOB MARLEY,STEVIE WONDER,EARTH WIND & FIRE .From yr10 i began drum lessons at monterey technical school with (RIC LEITHBRIDGE & IAN ORR) & started with the school stage band. I progressed to professional lessons outside of school with(GLEN BAYLESS). Not long after this i met (JOHN WATSON)he was a big influence on me & later helped me develope my skills & career along the way.

My first ever big concert experience i was under age but managed to sneak my way into the showgrounds to witness (STEWART COPELANDS) solid driving back beat 2"& 4" with(POLICE) on there farewell(SYNCRONICITY TOUR) I couldnt believe how he drove the band so hard ,but it inspired me enough to want to play drums so from about age 16yrs I joined various melbourne cover bands from mid 80s-early90s such as (PHIL PARA,JABULANI, WJAZ,KOLORS).Jabulani gave me my first experience to jamm with some of the biggest international musicians around(STEVIE WONDER)was in Australia 1987 tour & I met Stevie & his drummer at the time (DENNIS DAVIS)i got to jamm with (NATHAN WATTS) & (GREG PHILLINGANES) when they turned up to our gig billboard in melbourne, the best advice Dennis gave me which i still stand by now was to keep it "SIMPLE & SOLID".

1991 saw me join legendary soulful blues singer & songwriter guitarist legend(IAN MOSS) with whom i recorded drums on his second studio solo album (WORLDS AWAY)

with soulmates (CLAUDE CARRANZA) & (CHRIS BEKKER)which was released in october of that year. After an exstensive 3 month tour headlining his own shows,1992 saw us perform in front of 250,000 people in one month as guests to (ROD STEWART) on his Australian & New Zealand tour later that year Worlds Away was released in Germany,Austria,Switzerland & Scandinavia.1992 also gave me the opportunity to record drums with (JAMES REYNE&JAMES BLUNDELL) on (DINGOES) classic (WAY OUT WEST)which reached No.1 & acheived ARIA Status Country song of the year.

1994-2010 Since then i have toured Australia & Overseas perfoming live over the past 20yrs opening for International Acts like ,(BRYAN FERRY,BILLY JOEL,INXS,SEAN PAUL,KCI & JO JO,JIMMY CLIFF,GEORGE THOROGOOD,ERIC CLAPTON,AL SLAVIK,GEORGE LYNCH,CHRIS ISAKK,COSBY STILS & NASH,OVERPROOF SOUNDSYSTEM,KATCHAFIRE,LADY 6,SHAPESHIFTER Also played Live & Recorded with some of Australias best Artists & International( IAN MOSS,JAMES REYNE,RENEE GEYER,MARGRET URLICH,WOLFGRAMM SISTERS,DARYL BRAITHWAITE, GLEN SHORROCK,RUSSELL MORRIS,BAKELITE RADIO,BLACK SORROWS,JOE CREIGHTON & UPTOWN RULERS,SALAMANDER, RICK PRICE,TINA ARENA,ZAN & SHEREEN ABERATNEY,VANESSA AMOROSI,ROSS WILSON,JOE CAMILLERI,KATE CEBERANO,TROJAN BLOODLINERS,DEBRA BYRNE,JAMES BLUNDELL,VIKA&LINDA BULL,LARRY MALUMA,DANIELLE GAHA,ROSE BYGRAVE,MATT TURLEY,JENNY MORRIS,JOHN FARNHAM,TOMMY EMANNUEL,DANIEL MERRIWEATHER,ERAN JAMES,GARY PINTO,BLX,JOSH OWEN,MAGENTA,ERNEST RANGLIN,BUNNY RUGGS,JUNIOR KELLY,TANYA STEPHENS,JON STEVENS .

DRUMSCENE SEP/OCT/NOV 2006

It was when a touring band from the suburbs of Melbourne came to town.It was a music school,I cant remember the name but I remember watching the drummer David Porter. He was a massive influence on me-I loved watching him play-hes a cat as well.I Knew I couldnt possibly become the best drummer because there were guys that had been playing since they were 4 years old and were monsters.Guys like Davey Porter and Omar Hakim and so many of the great jazz players.I never thought I could play like that but I always saw myself more like Keith Moon or Stewart Copeland-a little off tap.

DRUMSCENE 2008

I remember when i was in my late teens, toward the end of my Virgil Donati phase.I was desperate for something new and different. When i asked for these things they generally come my way.So i went to a club in carlton and saw a drummer by the name of Davey Porter. His one crash cymbal was broken,he had one mounted tom,his snare wires were dangling off the bottom of his snare drum, but man!The hairs on the back of my neck stood up!It sounded so good to me that my competitive juices surged like a tidal wave.In time i learned that he had this thing going on so strong. There was no competing with that, even though i tried many times.I had to strive to find my thing as he had found his.I wound up going through so much study, analysis and intellectualisation to find it,that i got confused.Davey was just 'Doing It'.He wasnt over thinking it.I had to just 'Do it'too! I embarked on drum lessons with him.became good friends & learnt more from watching him play than most teachers could ever teach,He was like a thick vein of knowledge that i was meant to hit.
