Dave Thomas is an English musician who has gained rapid momentum thanks to the marriage of Youtube and his remarkable talents with instruments. Performing beautifully on the Piano and Accordion, videos which were shot in his bedroom have to date accrued over 15 million views on his Youtube channel (youtube.com/daveisthemusic).
After spending his teenage years playing guitar in a punk band, it was the discovery of Yann Tiersen's soundtrack to the 2001 film "Amelie" that inspired Dave to pursue instrumental music. He began to compose, drawing influences from many modern bands to composers such as Gustavo Santaolalla and Frederic Chopin, whilst honing the delicate touch that would become the trademark of his style.
In his original music, Dave funnels his sensuality through instruments to hypnotic effect. "Waking Dream" marries piano and accordion together, the organic and metallic sounds melting into one another in a precious lullaby, while "Our Story" stands alone as a 7 minute piano epic, an ode to a past relationship. Then there's "The Skeleton's Waltz" on accordion - reminiscent of something we might hear if Jack Skellington invaded Montmartre - each song a different story, each transporting the listener up and away.
It's this sense of being 'carried away' which lies at the center of the music Dave creates: "I begin to play, and there's sort of a feedback where it very quickly takes me", he says of his style. "It's like a journey. The music starts and it unravels itself and it carries me along, and then I begin to unravel too. I suppose that's what I would like to accomplish – to carry the listener, unravel them."
As a result of his success online, Dave has been invited to perform at New York Fashion Week for LORICK New York, as well as a residency at Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is currently working on a debut album to be released early next year.
