05.05.2009 - New Arrival: Danilo Ercole

Reigning from the one country that seems to have invented partying, Brazilian DJ/Producer Danilo Ercole was brought up with the right basis to work towards a successful musical career. With the Brazilian vibe running through his veins and plenty of talent to translate it into music, he expressed himself through some strong remixes and productions. It all started with a bootleg. Never would Danilo have guessed it to end up in a few big Armada releases. But here he is, with his second solo release, 'Broken Wings', out on the S107 label. There's a first and second for everything, and we certainly don't expect this to be the last to have heard of this new talent. Time to introduce the world to the Brazilian vibe called Danilo Ercole.

First contact

Danilo:"When I was young I loved to listen to all kinds of music, but when I discovered dance music with 80's & 90's artists, I completely fell in love with it. Later in 2000/2001, a local radio here started broadcasting some Ministry of Sound radio shows that introduced me to the melodies of trance music and made me fall in love again. And well this is where I've been ever since."

Never did any type of music grab hold of Danilo this much before, not the way trance did. He started dj'ing about 10 years ago, right after being infected with the beats. It took him 4 years to start producing, finding out the profits of being able to change and re-form tracks for dj'ing. Danilo:"I started producing about 6 years ago, making little edits and reworks to spin in my sets and always learning more and more about the software. I produced some techno stuff as 'Dec D' in the past, gaining support of some techno DJ's, but in trance I decided to show my work when I did a bootleg of 'Jose Gonzales – Crosses'. I played the bootleg in some of my gigs and I got very good feedback from the crowd, so I thought it was time to get the word out and send it to some big DJ's. I got support of all of them and my name started to appear in the trance scene."

A first release

The first Ercole sound waves hiking up the scene, were 'Sea Shadow' and Danilo's remix of 'Global Illumination - Tremble', and led the way to an ever-climbing position upon the large pile of talented producers. Being asked to remix 'Tremble' offered Danilo a chance to show his sound to the larger masses, and he was more than happy to fulfill their request. Danilo: "After the success of 'Crosses' I got a mail of Armada requesting that 'Global Illumination -Tremble' remix. When I read it I just yelled out: "Oh my god, I can’t believe it!" and started to jump around my room, haha! That was definitely one of the best moments of my young career in music production, to sign a remix to one of biggest labels of the world. At the same time 'Sea Shadow', my first official release, was pumping in some DJ sets and radio shows like ASOT and others."

Yes, things were looking bright for Danilo. Releasing stuff on several of the biggest labels in the world, saw his name gaining more recognition in his home country as well. But Brazil isn't always the best place to live when craving a DJ career inside the country. Danilo:"I've been a DJ for more than 10 years already, but now that I'm making name in the global trance scene I receive more attention than ever before. I've already played in some of best Brazilian clubs and parties and am considered to be the reference in trance and progressive in Brazil, together with my fellow colleagues Jack and Fabio Stein. I do have some gigs here sometimes, but I haven't got a full schedule all the time. Most promoters like to book their friends and some rich guys that use their money to appear in the spotlights. The funny thing here in Brazil is that you need to make name outside the country to appear inside the country. Some things really need to change here."

Other than that, the EDM scene in Brazil is pretty decent. Danilo:" We have a big EDM scene here, it's not only Samba, haha! Last years the biggest part of the scene came from psychedelic and now electro and minimal are getting big. We have a small but growing trance scene here today. Some places like Sao Paulo, Recife and Porto Alegre have the best parties and clubs that support us, we already had some of the best trance DJ's playing there. This year the first Sensation White will take place, which is a big step towards the future. I hope we get more and more parties like those here in future, so the promoters will notice us."

First plans & sounds

Danilo: "Progtechlifting is how I call some of my sounds. I always try to make a mix of various styles and put them all together with that Brazilian groove. I’m an open minded producer. I produce things from house, techno, deep, melodic, dark, uplifting, without labels."

That's a given fact. There's not exactly one style to place Danilo's tracks into. And that's the beauty of it. It was the progressive fit, but minimalistic and piano-kissed 'Harbour' on the Coldharbour label that really put his name on the map. All reason to be proud of this achievement, Danilo looks back to the track with a smile, stretched from ear to ear. Danilo: "'Harbour' is one of my master pieces. I’ve been a fan of Coldharbour tracks for a long time, always playing their stuff in my sets. It's a dream come true to have a release on your favorite label, isn’t it? And it's great that the track was featured on Markus Schulz' 'Toronto '09' compilation and on a first Brazilian trance compilation called 'Global Concept' by EnergyBR."

First S107: Broken Wings

Shortly after 'Harbour', Danilo challenged himself to make a vocal track. Teamed-up with the lovely Marcie, who's been leaving the scene breathless with her soothing high voice, Danilo came up with 'Broken Wings', out on the S107 label. 'Broken Wings' is a delicate progressive track with a rock influenced guitar lead on top, emphasizing Marcie’s vocals at the break. Danilo:"It was a great experience for both me and Marcie, because we had to work from such a big distance, close to 10.000 km. I know Marcie since I remixed a track for Eddie Sender with her vocals, and I talked to her to work on something together in the future. So, some time ago I produced the instrumental and send it to her. She liked it and started writing and singing. After a few fixes and mastering, the work was done. I decided to make 3 mixes of the same track to show my skills on various styles within trance." As usual, Danilo couldn't stop himself from

Future First

Though he wished it was different, Danilo currently has to work on music in his spare time, as he has a regular day job. Danilo: "It's the dream of every DJ, but in Brazil only few of them are able to go for music fulltime. I have a day job, working fulltime from 8am to 6pm. But I definitely have plans to go full time on music in near future. Let’s just see what'll happen." For now, there's plenty of stuff to look forward to. One of them is 'the Brazilian vibe'.

Danilo: "I have a couple of new tracks finished here. Remixes for AVA and Coldharbour to be out shortly and some remixes for my colleagues here in Brazil too. I have plans to do an album in near future, but it's too early to talk about it. I'm also mixing a compilation within the next months, the second edition of Global Concept by EnergyBR. I will try to work on my very first Europe Tour as soon as possible. I think it's good if people get in touch with the Brazilian vibe a bit, so let’s see how things will go."
