As a side project of Artist Charles Benefiel, An Atlas Of Stars draws its inspiration from the recesses of wilderness while eluding the boundaries of traditional music. Creating an ethereal and haunting atmosphere, the music swirls around the mind like distant memories bereft of natural sounds.

As a visual artist, Benefiel has lived all over the world. Intrigued by systems theory, much of his recent work has focused on sound and symbol and the organizational properties of the mind.

Many of the pieces presented here were created to help curb the chronic insomnia that Benefiel has suffered from for over 25 years. While stripping down his artistic approach, he has focused his energies in addressing the need for simplified living in contemporary society. In 2006 Benefiel started The Sound Earth Project, a not-for-profit dedicated to Sound art, environmental art and acoustic ecology, as well as promoting a environmental responsibility. In conjunction with Helios Builders, he also manages Richmond Mills - a 250,000 sq ft. factory converted to artist space in Philadelphia.
