Cortez were formed in October 2003 by Matt Leuw (ex of Coin-op and Crest), who had returned to his hometown of Norwich after spending a few years down by the seaside in Brighton. He soon roped in old friend Swiss Robinson to play bass, and then recruited drummer David Indge.

After playing a couple of well-received shows as a trio an expansion of the sound was deemed necessary and Liz Moore was drafted in on Violin and Keyboards.

Indie label NROne Records soon expressed an interest and early in 2005 Cortez made their first release on the label, which they have since followed up with another two singles and the albums "Conquistador" and "Too Orangey For Crows", all of which have attracted rave reviews.

The band have embarked on two national tours so-far as well as a quick jaunt over the North Sea to do dates in Holland.

As of the beginning of August 2007, the band are no longer together. Former members of Cortez are in the following bands however: The Matthew Project, The Sally Army, We Know Judo, The Gore Vidals, 2 Hot 2 Sweat, Rory Mcvicar's all-star band and Trickbaby. Goodnight, god bless.
