Welcome to Chicago a cappella’s Myspace page. We’re glad you found us – now find out more about us!
The group was born in 1993 as the brainchild of Jonathan Miller, a self-described “recovering musicologist” who grew up singing every kind of music imaginable in the Chicago Children’s Choir. A longtime member of the professional choral scene in Chicago, he dreamed of a small ensemble of top-notch singers that could easily handle anything from complicated Renaissance polyphony to swinging jazz and tear-the-roof-down spirituals. With a group of nine singers (including Jonathan), Chicago a cappella gave its first concert at The Theater Building in Chicago on September 7, 1993.
Pretty soon the ensemble had a loyal following of music fans in Chicago, and since then we’ve toured to 11 states and Mexico and sung for ever-growing audiences at our home concerts in the Chicago area. We’ve also released six CDs, which have gained us even more fans around the country (and around the world!).
Some highlights of Chicago a cappella’s history include giving world premieres of new works (including Chen Yi’s “The West Lake,” which was commissioned to commemorate our tenth anniversary, and five new works to celebrate our 15th); singing at the Ravinia Festival and the Chicago Humanities Festival; performing live on Chicago’s WFMT radio; making a music video for WTTW Channel 11’s “Arts Across Illinois”; appearing as guest choir on two CDs by the British indie rock band Electrelane; and receiving rave reviews from the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Fanfare, and American Record Guide, among many others.
We hope you’ll join us at one of our upcoming concerts. Check out our website at chicagoacappella.org for more information, tickets, and CDs.
