Songstress, Emcee, Radio Show Personality, Journalist and Performer Chela Simone was born in Oakland California. A city that the Black Panther Party, Sly & the Family Stone, Green Day, En Vogue, Hieroglyphics and Too Short, all called home. A well-versed woman, who began her music career at 13 when she attended University of California Berkeley - Young Musicians Program to study Classical Music (Opera), Voice Composition, & Piano Arrangement.
In 1991, Chela Simone formed a Rap Group called "Children of Mary Jane" (named after a local tagging crew Sons Of Maryjane or SOM), with collaborate, Toy Himes (N. J. native). At that time she used the alias Tiye Selah. With a major local buzz but no promise of a deal, the two decided to go in different directions. At the age of 18, after developing a following as a solo artist she traveled to Miami to showcase in "How can I be Down" and other local venues, Ocho Rios, Jamaica where she spent over a year recording and developing musical versatility. However, beautiful beaches and "Irie" vibes were not enough to hold her down.
Chela Simone boarded the next plane for an injection of the "Big Apple" (NY). Chela Simone gained a great deal of respect in the community of musicians. Rapping, singing, dancing, reading spoken word,her love for music far outweighed her love for anything else so she chose to further educate herself in the art of sound creation. Sighting the need for women to be more independent in the recording industry Chela attended San Francisco State University where she studied Audio Engineering.
Chela Simone was featured on the song F.U.W Bomb Hip Hop Records release of Show Business as alias Tiye Selah (2004). She toured with OM recording artist Colossus as lead-vocalist, Background vocalist on Rise Up , DJ Zeph and Azeem's release with OM records (2007), released two ep's under titles Ineffable-the leak(2007), and Blah Blah Blah (2008) was featured on BPitch Control artist Kik'si second album, Kaiku appearing on the track Good voodoo (2007 and Berlin's Jay Haze(Fuckpony) (2010) release- Fall into me, and I know it happened, to name a few.
From the We B Girlz 2008 European Tour- with Roxanne Shanté, Bahamadia, Invincible, Eternia, Shania D, Stacy Epps, Yarah Bravo, and DJ Shortee. To Europe’s Hip Hop Kemp Festival with artists such as The Roots ,Atmosphere ,Brother Ali , Mr. Lif & Akrobatik, Chela Simone has gained an ever growing fan base from Oakland to Switzerland. Blazing stages worldwide with the likes of, Sa Ra, Giles Peterson, Goapele, Jennifer Johns, KRS1, Pharaoh Monch, Talib Kweli, Common, Del, J*Davey, Hieroglyphics, Acyealone, ABRude, Medusa, Common, Lyrics Born, Saafir & The Whoriddas (Hobo Junction), Mystic Journeymen, Jungle Bros, De La Soul, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Strange Fruit Project, Living Legends. Chela is currently touring and lending her voice and art to social justice. Chela Simone is set to release her new album entitled Death Of a Mermaid, under alias HOLLY SAUCY in 2010
