LOUISIANA CA$H BIO

Grambling, Louisiana: September 24, 2009

Looking at the career arcs of Ice Cube and Kanye West, college dropouts have fared pretty well as rappers. The Bayou State's Louisiana Ca$h hopes to add to that legacy and also become another star from what has become a hip hop hotbed. Ca$h's first memories of music were watching his mother and uncle dance to the sounds of Bobby Womack, Barry White, and Gerald Levert in their Jonesboro, Louisiana home. He also was a huge fan of Kriss Kross and Mystikal, starting to write his first raps over songs from the latter's album, Unpredictable, when he was nine. However, after his uncle was shot and paralyzed during an argument, his mother decided to move the family to Grambling. The change of scenery had a positive effect on Ca$h especially given that the local middle school and high school were located on the Grambling State University campus. "I was just a little bad when I came to Grambling," he says. "Me being a hothead, I would get in fights. But being surrounded by that college atmosphere, you could see people who were actually successful and had on suits like teachers and professors. So I saw a whole new aspect of life." With a newfound focus, he became an honor roll student and star athlete, collecting all-state honors as a point guard and sprinter, and eventually receiving a basketball scholarship to Northwestern State University. He also continued to pursue music as part of a local duo, Cook N Cash. However, his first semester at NSU happened to coincide with Cook N Cash scoring a regional smash, "My Jam," which was getting airplay in Dallas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. "I was doing shows and I'd have to go back to school late," he says. "It was just too much. So I just chose music and came back to Grambling after the first semester." Upon his return to Grambling, Cook N Cash deciding to pursue solo careers. A few more local hits ("Get Your Swag On" and "Put The Camera On Me") as a solo artist convinced Ca$h that the possibility of a music career had viability and he ended up leaving Grambling after his junior year. Although initially family and friends urged him to finish up school, Ca$h's gamble paid off in September of 2008 when he found his breakthrough hit in the bouncy and energetic "Walk Wit A Dip." The catchy stuttering hook proved to be sticky quickly finding a spot in regular rotation on radio stations in Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Louisiana. As the song continued to grow, several labels courted the upstart rapper. Deciding on Battery/Jive, he has been in the studio with producers such as Oddz.N.Endz (Baby's "Written On Her"), Beats How You Want Em (Lil Wayne's "Misunderstood"), and more for his debut, My Life: The Introduction, Vol. 1. "I'm going to give the story of me," he says passionately. "I'm not going to tell you anything that I didn't do. I'm actually real and it's not about being a killer or a gangster or being out here in the streets robbing and stealing. It's about holding up your word and not being scared of anything." His lack of fear comes across clearly whether making grandiose statements on "Boss," telling a girl her boyfriend is a lame on "Be Here With Me," or mocking guys whose girlfriends are calling him on "Juicy." His confidence and presence on wax makes it clear what type of impact Cash hopes to have. "I'm going to be here and be one of the greats," he says. "I'm not one of these fly-by-night artists. I'm serious about what I'm doing and I want to go to the top. And I can rap better than your favorite rapper. This is what I've been waiting my whole life for." And what he left college to set out and accomplish!
