Carmen Calhoun, a local gospel artist who draws her influences from many different styles of music including folk, country, rock, neo soul, jazz, and African music, is a gifted songwriter. She's received accolades for co-writing the title tune to her brand new project, Broken & Blessed, a collection of contemporary Christian music and traditional and contemporary gospel music. She won second place in the Gospel/Christian category of the 2004 International Songwriting Competition and was chosen among over 11,000 entries from all over the world. An exceptional vocalist, shes frequently compared to songstresses like Babbie Mason and Nicole C. Mullen, comparisons which have forced the industry sit up and take notice.

Bobby Parker, Program Director of WAUG-AM in Raleigh, North Carolina says, I love this Project! I am simply floored!! Tim Wicks, Gospel announcer of Philadelphias WNAP 1110AM says, The voice, the anointing, the conviction, all can be heard and felt immediately upon hearing Carmen sing! Kenny G of GospelCrib.8.com says, Carmen is simply amazing! Her vocals captivate the mind and soul of the believer. If you don't believe, trust me. After one listen to Carmen, you won't wait to repent. My favorite track is the soulful 'Broken and Blessed.'" Henry W. Harris, President of Spirit Telecommunications Company says, "Carmen Calhoun's project Broken and Blessed is truly a breath of fresh air. Spiritco1.com listeners are blessed to have her ministry a part of our continuous playlists."

Calhoun's passion for ministry has been a propelling force in her musical career. She wants to use the talents the Lord has given her to minister to God's people. Just like Christ has done for me, I want the songs that I sing to meet people where they are," she says. "The music should inspire you to dance, rejoice, reflect, move, cry, praise and worship. The music was created to cross all racial barriers, to impact all cultures, and to bring people in communion and right relationship with the living God, she says.

Her musical gifting, one that she's had since she was a child, has afforded her opportunities to sing all over the country. She fellowships at Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia, Maryland, where David Anderson is the senior pastor. A native of Prince Frederick, Maryland, she resides in Washington, D.C. with her husband Terrance A. Calhoun and children Tiffany, Aaron and Dwight.
