Nowadays, it seems like every time you turn around and everywhere you look, there is new talent arising overnight. Someone else's music to add to the already saturated and overstocked music shelves. It is safe to say that some talent fills a need for the fad of the season in the popular culture. But fads come to and fro, they are not permanent. It is also safe to say that some talent is of substance, remaining through all seasons. The latter can be said of Carlos Cintron Flores.
Carlos Cintron Flores, also known as CCF, comes from a family where musical gifts were bestowed upon at a young age. As a youngster, Carlos was drawn to the bass player at church, and naturally developed a love for the instrument. He would watch the musician intently and then back home, he would grab anything that resembled a bass and would spend hours pretending to play. His parents caught on to the interest and enthusiasm possessed by their son and gave him a real bass for Christmas. Probably the best gift Carlos has ever received. Having no television and no other interest at hand, Carlos would practice for hours each day, lavishly pursuing his fascination with his instrument, thus eventually mastering it. His other brothers shared the same experience with other instruments.
Not too long thereafter, the Cintron Family traveled to Guatemala as missionaries.
Mr. Cintron would take the children everywhere they went to minister. Los Hermanos Cintron (The Cintron Brothers) would sing and play, attracting people with a "the instruments are bigger than they are!" curiosity. As time went on, and as they kept growing in their talent, polishing and tightening their skill, and knitting their voices together, people would ask for an LP to buy after their presentations. This can be described as CCF's training ground.
Back in the United States, The Cintron Brothers kept singing and playing, becoming more refined in their gifting, as well as recording (they recorded 6 albums together) their own music. Eventually, Carlos developed an interest in another instrument, and just as with the bass, by following the previous format, he taught himself how to play the piano.
Time passed and before they knew it, they became adults. With lives of their own to pursue, and after touring together for 24 years, The Cintron Brothers decided to take a break. But Carlos felt called to keep writing songs and record on his own. "Music is what I do, I couldn't take a break," recalls Carlos. He received encouragement and support from his siblings to go solo, and with their blessing, Carlos has been living in what he feels is God's will for his life in this season.
Although music has been his life and his passion, stepping out from having the company and camaraderie of his siblings for many years, into what God has called him to, required faith and trust. His solo career has been a season of growth, of exploring the unknown and conquering what lies ahead.
His first solo project, Próximo Nivel, (released in 2001) was the result of what God had asked him to do, and that was to continue honing his talent, but now with a different perspective and a different sound. Now, CCF shares a talent that has been refined, polished and sharpened throughout his lifetime, clearly reflected in his second solo project, Otra Vez. Wanting to sing about the truth that transforms and sets people free, "this project talks about self-esteem and how to trust God when things go wrong in life. The track Espejo is a good example of how if we would look at ourselves through the truth of God's Word and how He sees us, our bad perception of ourselves and our own distorted self-image would be greatly diminished. We would find our own reflection in Him, not in man-made mirrors."
Carlos is thankful and grateful for the musicians that played with him on this record, including Isaac Sakko, Gregg Schmitt, Hector (Papo) Camacho, Wiso Aponte, Rey Torres, Ariel Cedeño, Kervin Lebrón, and José Gómez, making it a much more intense and musically diverse recording. Also, featured artists in Otra Vez include Christine D'Clario, Isaac Sakko, Michael Rodriguez, Laurie Colón and Lion Sama.
Currently, CCF is promoting his new CD, taking his message with him in whatever platform he finds himself, bringing truth and hope through his songs wherever he goes throughout Puerto Rico, the United States and Latin America. And when questioned about whether he would go back to singing with The Cintron Brothers or keep singing on his own, he says, "I have been given a task to carry on solo, but the break that The Cintron Brothers decided to take was not a definite one."
