B.S.U. - BODDUM SIDE UP “Zoe Life” By: Keith “1st Prophet” Kennedy
In life, natural order dictates that the top of the food chain gets the most attention. However, once in a while, a small band of dedicated warriors can upset the balance of nature with dedication, hard work, and opportunity. The result is a new order moving the bottom class to the top of the world. With the advent of B.S.U., the music industry is set to achieve a new world order. Today, the ruling class has moved from the BODDUM SIDE UP. A Chinese proverb states, “a journey of 1,000 miles begins with but a single step.” That step for the tightly knit camp of B.S.U. began with their parents leaving the beaches of war torn Haiti to the promise of golden shores in America. “Our parents came to this country with nothing but a dream,” proudly states B.S.U. member Joe Poppie. However, as first generation Haitian-Americans, the five member set quickly realized that in America, moving up the cultural food chain directly corresponded with a respect factor. And they learned even faster to get respect, one must earn respect. To that end, Deville, J-Wurk, T-Dub, Money Man, and Joe Poppie formed a bond stronger than Superman to combat the ignorance and bigotry each faced on a daily basis. Individually, they might win a few battles, but collectively they could win a war. Together, they created B.S.U. (BODDUM SIDE UP) to fight for respect through their weapon of choice, music. Why music? Deville explains, “some people can run fast, some people can draw – we rap. This is our way out.” B.S.U. then adopted the philosophy of T.I. who put down, “I don’t know what you’d do for your respect, but I’mma die for mine.” B.S.U. took advantage of every waking moment by constantly pouring their frustrations into lyrics and recordings. Soon, instead of beating their oppressors with fists, they won hearts with beating bass bins. B.S.U. customized show intros for program directors including Ed The World Famous (WWLD), personalities (WBWT), college radio (WANM), power radio such as Teddy T’s show on WPOW-Miami and South Florida’s Babalu Bad Boyz of X102.3. Not to mention, street kings like Cool Running’s Bigga Rankins R.N.R. mix CD series also utilized B.S.U.’s versatile sound. Plus, tracks from their buzzing mix CD, “Zoe Life” including “City Boy” with Skip-A-Chuck (bless the dead), “Whoop” featuring Lil Boy, and the quintessential Haitian greeting, “Sak Passe” quickly squashed unfounded hatred as B.S.U. earned not only respect, but fans as well. With this newfound bandwagon reaching as far away as Germany, B.S.U. has not let early success inflate their ego. “We’re still not in a position where we want to be. We plan on using this as a stepping stone into other ventures including the business world,” T-Dub prophesizes. “Zoe Life” is a South Floridian term for the life of a Haitian-American. It is a life some would describe as reaching the bottom of the cultural barrel. But, it is a life that the B.S.U. proudly accepts in the fight for equality as witnessed with matching “Zoe Life” tattoos. With their music, B.S.U. is poised to turn a negative into a positive creating a new world order featuring the BODDUM SIDE UP.
