Vocalist, multi-genre songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Brian began singing at 14, using Jazz standards. At 16, he auditioned as a vocalist for the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts (LACHSA). As a student, he performed on many occassions as lead vocalist of the LACHSA Jazz Ensemble. He took academic classes in the morning, college-level music courses in the afternoon, and at night played piano and sang in Old Town Pasadena. He began to sing at more Los Angeles clubs, though still a minor. Brian sang the national anthem at Dodger Stadium and was featured in articles in the Pasadena Star News and La Opinion. One sports journalist called his performance "the highlight of the game."

Still in his teens, he sang at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival. He often was invited to sing with professional acts, including a performance with jazz legend Jack Sheldon in a Tarzana nightclub.

Brian attended UCLA, entering as an astrophysics major. He excelled in the sciences, but found it lackng in personal fulfillment. After his first year, he began a personal transformation, writing poetry and rock ballads. He got involved in college politics and community organizing. As the California organizer for the Coalition of Immokallee Workers , he traveled to Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina to witness the living and working conditions of farm workers.

He graduated from UCLA with a BA in History. He says, "I always planned to experience life before I submerged myself into my art. I have come full circle from artist to idealist to realist back to artist--which, for me, lies somewhere in between."
