First off, thank you for dropping by! While you're here, let me tell ya a little about myself! I decided to write this little introduction, because if I were to stumble across a new artist here on MySpace, I'd prob want to know a little more about them as well! If you haven't already figured it out, my name is Brian Colburn. I am an independent musician from the "sticks" of New Jersey. I have been playing in bands in the tri-state for over a decade.
A few years ago (early 2007 to be exact) I tried to start up a musical project that leaned toward the "acoustic side" of life. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to be coming together. Fast forward to November of 2007, and it feels like 30 below zero outside (abnormally cold for that time of year). I began to wish it was just a few months earlier, something to pull me out of the inevitable "winter doldrums." A few hours and a few chords later, "Summer Song" was born.
It was that point I started this MySpace page, to share the song with my friends, family and anyone willing to listen. After "Summer Song" was recorded, I decided to keep moving forward, with the goal of putting out a full-length CD. Close to six month's later, in April of 2008, my debut CD "Literal Fiction" was released. It was around the CD's release that I decided to get out there and play these songs for anyone willing to listen!
Throughout the remainder of 2008, I had the opportunity to perform at some amazing venues and festivals throughout the East Coast. Most notably, I placed in the top 3 for a contest held by the now defunct 106.5 G-Rock radio, and was able to (along with fellow artists The Fifth & The Caterpillar Book) perform on the same stage as Toad The Wet Sprocket, a band that is very influential to me.
Along with the Toad gig, I was invited by Six Flags Great Adventure to perform for their "Live & Local: Acoustic" Series at their Jackson, NJ location. Later that summer I was able to pull off a self-funded New England run of shows, topped off with a mid-day performance at the Keene Music Festival in Keene, NH.
During my Summer shows, I began recording some of the new material I was working on. Via the power of YouTube, and this very site, I was able to keep my friends and fans up to speed on what I was writing, as I was writing it! It made it possible for those who couldn't necessarily attend a show, to be able to be a part of it (something I could have never imagined 10 years ago when I started gigging!)
By years end, I teamed up with fellow NJ musicians Sean Faust and Mitch Savoie for an extremely successful Toys for Tots benefit. I am happy to say that the event went so far beyond our expectations, that it will now be an "annual" event!
In Feb. of 2009, I released my 2nd CD, entitled "Time Marches On" and spent most of the year playing shows to support the release. In June of 2009, I was offered to share the stage with my favorite band, Blues Traveler. It was an amazing show, and I am very grateful to have been given such an opportunity!
After the Blues Traveler performance, I jumped back into the studio, and invited in Kris Van Cleave (from The Caterpillar Book) to play keyboards and Hammond organ on the tracks. Those tracks became "Life Happens," my third studio CD.
Fast forward to 2011, and I am now in support of a brand new EP "Better Days" and continuing to play shows throughout the East Coast!
It's amazing how I've had the chance to introduce my work to thousands of people who would have never heard of me otherwise. I am extremely thankful for all of the friends and fans I have made -- which leads me to my next point.
For those of you who are wondering, I do run this site entirely on my own. There's no "team" here or other band members -- it's just me -- so if you have any questions, please email me through the "contact" part of the page -- I read and respond to every email. I figure, if you're taking the time to listen to and support my music, what kind of person would I be to ignore that?!
And finally, one of the questions I get asked the most is "Is there anything I can do to help you out?" (which goes to show how many awesome people I have met through this site!). Honestly, the BIGGEST way you could help me, or ANY independent artist for that matter, is to just tell someone about my songs, and where to find me! I don't have a label or marketing firm pumping thousands of dollars into advertising the fact that I exist. I rely solely on word-of-mouth. So, if you know someone -- anyone -- that may take a liking to what you're currently hearing, please direct them here as well!
Most importantly, thank you for taking the time to listen to, and support my music!! Without you, none of this would even be possible!!
- Brian
