Break of Reality is a cello quartet gone mad. American instrumental crossover group Break of Reality consists of three cellists and a percussionist. Formed at the Eastman School of Music in 2003, the band is filling concert venues around the country with fans eager to hear "cello rock".
Break of Reality's sound is cinematic, subdued and heavy all at once. Their live audiences are equally diverse; fans of Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, and Yo-Yo Ma are finally getting acquainted.
Break of Reality has performed in a variety of venues around the country, from New York City clubs such as Joe's Pub to classical music halls such as Eastman Theatre. In 2007, the group performed as a featured ensemble at the New Directions Cello Festival in Sacramento, CA.
The group has also performed on a variety of radio and television shows, including Fearless Music TV, an internationally syndicated musical showcase on the Fox network airing in over 200 cities in the United States and 30 countries worldwide. Along with performing, the group has written music for dance, film, and television. Their music was featured in an Emmy award-winning episode of AIR: America's Investigative Reports on PBS.
Break of Reality is committed to music education, working with students of all ages through workshops, master-classes, and student performances. The band has released two independent albums of original music, The Sound Between (2006) and Spectrum of the Sky (2009), which have sold over 30,000 copies worldwide.
The band is currently working on a cover song project, which will include tracks by Metallica, System of a Down, Coheed and Cambria, and more.
The members of Break of Reality have been applauded for their "thunderous tone" and their "take no prisoner approach to cello playing" (Sacramento Bee Newspaper, June 2007). Their sound has been described as having "excitement, originality, and an undeniable intensity that louder, heavier bands only dream of. Break of Reality is going to win a Grammy someday. Bank on it." (Rochester City News, April 2007).
