The Boys Choir of Harlem Inc. was started in 1968 by Dr. Walter J. Turnbull in the basement of the Ephesus Church in central Harlem as an after-school program with 20 young boys. With music as the motivator and catalyst, Dr. Turnbull engaged students in the educational process, opened them up to learning, and provided the vehicle through which they were able to transfer the skills they learned through the arts--higher order thinking, problem solving ability, perception, imagination and creativity -- to the mastery of other academic subjects and in the process they learned positive behaviors and attitudes, developed social abilities, and strengthen verbal and communication skills.

Thirty-seven years later, this noble effort has grown to an on-sight alternative academy educating 600 students from grades 4 to 12. Both boys and girls have greatly benefited from the principles of hard work, honesty and discipline. An impressive 99% of the graduating class goes on to colleges or universities across the United States.

This time-proven system has caught the eye of educators across the nation who wish to see their young people benefit from Dr. Turnbull's vision. So in recent years the cities of Memphis, Chicago and Miami have adopted a similar program giving their youth the same opportunities that the young people of Harlem have had over these past three and a half decades.
