A consummate jazz improviser, gifted composer, and accomplished bandleader, guitarist Bobby Broom has been turning heads ever since the release of his 1981 debut, Clean Sweep. Twenty-five years and a lifetime of bandstand experience later, including invaluable sideman stints with such jazz greats as Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, and Charles Earland as well as the enigmatic New Orleans icon, Dr. John, the 45-year-old guitarist is at the peak of his powers, swinging with authority and ingenuity on Song and Dance, his debut for the Origin label and sixth overall as a leader.

Along with his working rhythm tandem of longtime bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins, the Chicago-based guitarist reinvents familiar pop and r&b staples from the ’60s and ’70s while also bringing his trio's musical approach to his original compositions and jazz standards. The result of Broom's various musical influences in a blend of modern jazz that's soulful and thoughtful and is, as Broom explained, “my way of adding a personal touch to my jazz experience—and my listeners’.”

Broom is also a member of the Deep Blue Organ Trio, a cooperative Chicago-based group featuring Hammond B-3 organ sensation Chris Foreman and veteran drummer Greg Rockingham (their debut CD—Deep Blue Bruise—and latest CD/DVD—Goin’ to Town: Live at the Green Mill—are both available on Delmark Records). A new disc on Origin Records entitled Folk Music will be released in october, 2007.

In addition to his work as a leader, Broom is also currently touring world-wide with Sonny Rollins’s group and appears on the tenor titan’s latest, Sonny, Please, on Rollins’s own Doxy label.
