Biomechanical’s existence started back in April 1999 by the founding member John K who wrote, recorded and arranged all of the music, with the exception of the songs ‘Existenz’ and ‘Survival’ which were co-written by Chris Webb and Jamie Hunt respectively. John also programmed & arranged all drums for Biomechanical with the addition of drum breaks by ex-drummer Matt C.
Biomechanical started as a life long goal for singer/songwriter John K who pre-visualised the three albums ‘Eight Moons’ , ‘The Empires of the Worlds’ and ‘Cannibalised’ from the very beginning. The three albums had one main story running through them.
He worked at the beginning with Adam Rose to bring ‘Eight Moons’ lyrically to life.
Musically John fused his influences from the great bands of the 80’s (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer) with orchestral film scoring. Heavily influenced by the great orchestral film music composers John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner & Elliot Goldenthal and with a sound musical foundation from studies in orchestration and instrumentation he managed to utilise the orchestra as an integral part of the song writing, creating this way a sound that earned the band its own place on the soundscape of Metal genres.
Guitarist Steve Forward played the guitars for the original recordings of the debut album ‘Eight Moons’. After Steve departed Biomechanical due to his very heavy professional schedule John K joined with guitarists Chris Webb , Jamie Hunt, bass player Jon Collins and drummer Matt C.
The first Biomechanical release came in the form of an EP (available only to magazines) with a few tracks from the original recordings by Steve Forward and an additional new track ‘Distorted’ (guitars performed by Chris Webb).
The EP titled ‘Distorted’ featured artwork by artist/web designer Lee Ellis who’s great work on the cover & inlay for ‘Eight Moons’ and help with the official Biomechanical site proved to be invaluable.
‘Distorted’ got a very impressive 9/10 from the top Metal magazine Terrorizer: “Biomechanical sound like they could well become leaders and not followers in their field.” (Paul Schwarz).
After that release, producer Steve Brown (former producer of The Cult & The Manic Street Preachers) managed Biomechanical who re-recorded the guitars and added new bass for the debut album ‘Eight Moons’. The album was recorded and mixed by John K and was mastered at the Sony Mastering in Whitfield Street Studios by Ray Staff. After many talks and negotiations Biomechanical got signed to Revolver Records for the release of the debut album ‘Eight Moons’.
The album gathered fantastic reviews which got the attention of Earache’s sister label Elitist Records. The owner of Elitist Records Lee Barrett approached Biomechanical and after negotiations all parties agreed and singed with Earache/Elitist records on 3rd September 2004.
The timing was perfect as the material for Biomechanical’s second album ‘The Empires of the Worlds’ had just finished. For the album’s lyrics John teamed up with bass player Jon Collins who is an exceptional lyric writer and the mix was done by the world class producer Andy Sneap. The cover was designed by the Spawn artist Nat Jones.
The ‘Empires of the Worlds’ was released on June the 6th 2005 and gained phenomenal reviews with twelve 10/10 marks and countless 9 and 8/10’s.
Biomechanical toured Europe with Decapitated, Stampin Ground, Exodus, 3 Inches Of Blood and opened for Shadow’s Fall and Nevermore for the promotion of the band’s second album.
John K wrote the third instalment titled ‘Cannibalised’ in 2006/7 and again engineered the recordings. Legendary Grammy Award Nominee, Judas Priest producer Chris Tsangarides took the production duties and mixed the album in the summer of 2007. The mastering took place at the 'Close to the Edge Studios' and was done by Jon Ashley. The cover was again designed by Nat Jones who created an incredible work. Cannibalised was released in February 2008. A landslide of great reviews (eight 10/10 and again countless 9/10 and 8/10‘s) led the band with a brand new line up (Gus Drax - Guitars, Adrian Lambert - Bass and Jonno lodge Drums) to play some of the biggest European festivals.
