A BRIEF STUDY IN WORLD HISTORY:
Big World started in Newport, RI in the late 70s. All the members were involved among the first bands in the punk/rock/surf/skate scene. After hanging out in Sid+victor's basement (The Pit) they decided to form a band, with the one and only jimmy silk . Their first gig was a stag party, considered a drunken success, they played shows from NY to Boston from 1979-85.
They have toured for such acts as: Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders, , The Tubes, Gang War with thunders and wayne kramer, and Joan Jett and the blackhearts, and cheetah crome among many others. While playing in such clubs as, The Old Raskeller, The Paradise, The Channel, Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel and The Livingroom in the new england area.

After inner turmoil [ we all got pissed at each

The band reemerged in 2002 with the current lineup:

-Big World rages gracefully with Sizzle & Crack-

Far too many young people today believe true heavy metal was launched during the '80s at MTV studios with big hairbands like Poison and Skid Row mugging all-pretty-like for the camera. The fact of the matter is metal, punk, hard core, etc. were all a natural-born rebellion against a two-fold cancer that had emerged onto the music scene in the early to mid-1970s: Corporate Rock and Progressive Rock. Lower-middle class kids from London, New York, or Paducah could never climb the corporate chain as high as Peter Frampton and Foreigner. And they sure as hell weren't going to be as proficient on any instrument like Emerson, Lake and **bleeping** Palmer! Right? It's from this strife and frustration that the earliest punk/metal emerged from the bowels of suburbia, with leather-clad idols The Ramones, Patti Smith and Television leading the pack.
This was music for the masses - simple, and cutting through all the B.S. that glam and prog-rock had laid down before it. As usual, Rhode Island's music scene had their finger firmly placed on the pulse of what was happening in the underground. Accordingly, in 1979 Newport's Big World crawled from the primordial ooze of the burgeoning Ocean State punk rock phenomenon, and marched from New York to Boston, making a few friends along the way with names like Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, and The Tubes. Playing the circuit at such revered venues as The (old) Living Room, The (old) Lupos, and The Paradise, the group led by the late Nick Stingley and original/current members Victor World & James Silk, carved out their own slice of the scene with obligatory frothy abandon. However, like all good concepts, Big World, along with much of the first wave of like-minded artists, fell under it's own weight in 1985.
Their official Myspace biography succinctly fleshes out the story: "We all got pissed at each other." Luckily for fans of the true punk genre, with the new millennium came new life for Big World. The quintet self-resurrected in 2002, consisting of the band's current incarnation which dons their latest CD Sizzle & Crack. The disc consists of 10 brilliantly simple, perfectly created vignettes of angst and rage, though always done with a heavy dose of sincerity - a characteristic that seemed to set the early punk/metal music aside from the later aggressive hardcore movement. Titles such as "Pedal To The Metal," "Girl Hell Threw Back," and "Heavy Metal Hotel" all tell the tale of where Big World have been, and where they're undoubtedly set to go. Though it's a tenuous and potentially embarrassing path to be doing this kind of music in your '40s, these guys pull it off with much grace and style. There was a huge temptation to re-print the lyrics to their song "We Won't Surrender" and let it stand alone as their review.
Big World reveal in 4 minutes and 16 seconds what it took me 500 words to convey. It's truly not only their story, but possibly the mission statement of the whole movement both then and now. "It was never our dreams of money that kept us hungry all these years. It could have been my teacher, but I swear it was the preacher who tried to control us with fear. You can put a gun right to our heads - But we won't surrender." I hate to break it to you boys, but there's no need for you to surrenderyou won.
