Port Arthur's murder rate is already higher than New Orleans
In New Orleans, about 12 of its half-million frolicking souls have been murdered so far this year.
In Baltimore, a city of roughly the same size, 10 people have been murdered so far in 2008.
Port Arthur, Texas, is about 1/10th the size of those two cities but has already tagged and bagged 3 murder victims in the first 30 days of 2008 . making its murder rate about three times higher than a couple of major American cities plagued by violence.
Maybe it's just a tragic and unlucky blip of fate, or maybe Port Arthur is becoming a genuine combat zone, but the rate of murders there in 2008 continues an uptick in killings that started in the autumn of 2007, a year when 11 citizens were murdered -- the most since 1999. So in the first month of the year, Port Arthur is already one-quarter of the way to an even deadlier year. That doesn't bode well for the PA homicide squad in the next few months.
