Baba Dango

Baba Dango was born and bread in greater Accra region of Ghana in an area called New Town or Lagos Town. It was a ghetto hard time and sometimes rough, happy in life but poor in pocket.

Sometimes don´t know where to roam and where to start, but with power of Almighty One I still survived. As a youth I sold mango at the Mallan Ata market to help mum and dad to pay my school fees.

I was influenced by Onipa Nua, which means people´s brother, a certain blind man in the neighbourhood who used to go from house to house singing and playing his self-made one string guitar, singing about love and social living.

We used to jam together, me playing my milk powder tin as drum. Some years later Onipa Nua became one of the famous artists in Ghana spreading his message all over the world before he passed away, may his soul rest in peace.

Later I formed a group which was only traditional drumming and singing in the area and I didn´t have the chance in Ghana to record until I came to Germany 1992 and the message kept spreading.

In Berlin I met an old classmate called Gordon Odarmetey and I joined a group called Ogidigidi. Together with people from Gambia and Senegal we formed the group Senegambigha which is regulary playing until today.



Baba Dango met Ras Donovan and he featured me in his reggae band. With this band I had the chance to play on the same stage with The Wailers, a man like Family Man (bass player from Bob Marley) and also Alanderson and Joseph Cotton. This year I played on a reggae festival with Junior Marley.

1997 I recorded my first three singles in Germany which I sung in Hausa language, songs like Zamanduniya, meaning "those with patients", Tumasama, meaning "jump up" and Dasuna Allah, which means "in the name of god", all produced by Tikeman. The song Wayo Allah kaine sarki meaning "god is my king" was produced by Darko also in Berlin.

Zamanduniya was a hit in Ghana due to the support of the radio stations "Vibe Fm" and "Joy Fm". It played on air every day and the people liked the message.

Therefore I had the chance to perform at the first ever carnival which took place at Osu Accra in 1998 backed by U2 band live on stage with over 5.000 people around. I was interviewed by Black Santino on vibe fm after the show and what I told him back then is what I still believe in today:



Music is my life and it helps to teach the youth the good thing from the bad. If you do good, good will follow. My lyrics base on peace, love and harmony. May Almighty cover us with forgiveness.
