DESCRIPTION:
Bihu denotes a set of three different cultural festivals of Assam and celebrated by the Assamese diaspora around the world. Assam is a land of folklore and tradition. One of the major Folk forms originating in this South Asian landscape is the colorful Bihu Dance and Songs. Assamese Folk culture is age old and Bihu Songs are one of its main pillars. The Bihu is the festival of colors and prosperity. In a year there are three Bihu festivals in Assam - in the months of Bohaag (Baisakh, the middle of April), Maagh (the middle of January), and Kaati (Kartik, the middle of October). Assamese Songs and Bihu Songs have almost become synonymous. Bihu is also used to imply Bihu dance and Bihu folk songs. The Rongali Bihu or the Bohag Bihu is an important festival of Assam. The most important festivals of Assam are the Bihus, celebrated with fun in abundance by all Assamese people irrespective of caste, creed, and belief. The Bihus have been celebrated in Assam since ancient times through various Assamese Folk tradition, primarily Bihu Dance and Songs. Each Bihu coincides with a distinctive phase in the farming calendar. The most important and colorful of the three Bihu festival is the Spring festival "Bohag Bihu" or Rongali Bihu celebrated in the middle of April. This is also the beginning of the agricultural season. Like any other folk forms all over the world Bihu has also gone through its significant changes both structurally as well as feel wise. Most of the Assamese contemporary pop Songs are either direct or mostly influenced by traditional Bihu Geet. The modern day Bihu Artists are keen on using modern urban and western instrumentation along with the traditional Dhol and other folk instruments.

This album "Dhisang" is a classic example of such a Modern day Assamese Bihu Geet collection. The singer Achurjya Barpatra has done a a fantastic job rendering his rustic baritone voice to these beautiful folk tracks. The emotional content of this album is quite rich. Songs like Toral Oi Torali and Rati Duporole deserves special mention. Overall this is a sweet and beautiful folk album that is a good listen.
