La nostra storia;



Gli Askatasuna nascono nel 2001 dalla comune passione e dall’ amore per la musica in levare.
Alle 4 persone iniziali si sono, in varie riprese, aggiunti altri elementi, fino ad arrivare agli attuali 8, tra cui una completa sezione fiati (tromba, trombone e sax).
Il nome Askatasuna significa “libertà” in lingua basca. Libertà… un bene primario che in molti, troppi, vogliono toglierci!
Accanto alla passione musicale e “filosofica” per tutto il filone Jamaicano, caratteristica specifica e ricercata del gruppo è quella di associare alla musica un valore aggiunto attraverso la scrittura di testi con un marcato impegno politico e sociale.
Comunque accanto a liriche più impegnate che toccano nodi critici del mondo globalizzato non si è mai accantonata quella vena di sana allegria e spensieratezza presente da sempre nel DNA degli Askatasuna. Per questo e molto altro ancora ci auto-identifichiamo con l’espressione “Funny&Social-Ska”.
Nel corso degli anni, la band, ormai giunta al suo sesto anno di vita, ha raccolto parecchi riscontri positivi da parte di critica e pubblico, dando vita dal 2001 al 2004 (data in cui è ricominciato un lungo e travagliato periodo di rifondazione del gruppo) a un centinaio di concerti che hanno toccato i palchi di diverse città d’Italia e Svizzera (dal Canton Ticino all’Emilia Romagna passando per Piemonte, Veneto e Lombardia).
Abbiamo condiviso il palco con gruppi come la Banda Bassotti, Betagarri, Statuto, The Orobians, Arpioni etc…
Siamo stati ospiti anche di Radio Popolare registrando in quell’occasione un mini-live di 4 pezzi (ormai introvabile) nell’auditorium “Demetrio Stratos”.
Nel 2004 dopo aver registrato il primo Cd in studio, che doveva essere strumentale ad una tournee nel Pese Basco il gruppo si è sciolto.
Dalla rottura in seno al gruppo sono emersi quattro “storici” componenti che non hanno mai smesso di credere nel progetto, non abbandonandolo neanche nei momenti più difficoltosi, dimostrando una forte passione e amore per la musica suonata.
Dopo anni in cui si sono avuti continui cambi di formazione che non hanno consentito la programmazione e progettazione di un lavoro con continuità, gli Askatasuna sono rinati nel 2006, coronando la loro attivita con due tour in Belgio (uno nel 2008 e uno nel 2009).
Per esprimere appieno le potenzialità del nuovo gruppo, si sono cominciati a scrivere pezzi completamente nuovi, abbandonando momentaneamente i brani suonati negli anni passati. Sono nate così canzoni che spaziano dal reggae al blues, dallo ska al folk-rock, dallo swing al rocksteady, il tutto ricamando sui singoli brani arrangiamenti mai banali e scontati.
Le esibizioni del gruppo si contraddistinguono per una forte carica energetica che ogni componente del gruppo scarica sul palco senza centellinare energie…. dunque preparatevi a piegare le ginocchia e a skankeggiare al ritmo degli Askatasuna.



Our History;



In 2001 Askatasuna group was born out of the shared passion and the love for the upbeat music. Originally four members, they are now a group of eight people who count a complete winds session (trumpet, trombone and saxophone).
Askatasuna means “freedom” in Basque…a priority good that many people too many… want to steal from us! Besides the music and philosophical passion for the whole Jamaican world, what really identifies this group is the association of an added value to the music through the lyrics characterized by a political and social commitment. Nevertheless, besides the most engaged lyrics about the controversial aspects of the globalization, they’ve never quit that sane happiness and lightheartedness, which have always been in Askatasuna DNA. For this reason and many others they identify themselves with the expression “Funny&Social Ska”. All over their six years of life up to now, the band has always been positively noticed by the critic and the public and from 2001 and 2004 they played around a hundred of concerts on the stages of many cities in Italy as well as in Switzerland (from the Ticino area to the Emilia Romagna throught Piemonte, Veneto and Lombardia). They shared the stage with other groups such as Banda Bassotti, Betagarri, Statuto, The Orobians, Arpioni etc… They were also guests at Radio Popolare where they recorded a mini-live four pieces ( not available any more) at the Demetrio Stratos auditorium. After recording their 1st CD at the studio, which was meant to be instrumental in a tour in the Basque Countries, the group got split up. From this rupture, four “veteran” members emerged, the ones who had never given up believing in their project and never quit it not even in the most difficult times showing a strong passion for their music. After some pretty difficult years where the group couldn’t find the chance to plan a proper program and a common work due to the quite many members’ changes, Askatasuna were finally re-born in 2006.
They started writing completely new pieces in order for them to fully express the potential of the new group and they temporally left behind the pieces of the past few years and created such a great variety of genres, from reggae to blues, from ska to folk-rock and from swing to rocksteady…always using original and fanciful arranging for their lyrics.
In 2008 and 2009 Askatasuna has made two tours in Belgium playing in city as Gent and Liegi.
Such a lively boost characterizes all their performances, where each member of the group expresses this amazing and contagious energy on the stage…
…so get ready to bend your knees and skanking in Askatasuna rhythm!
