Out of the Hill country of Northeastern Mississippi through the ‘50s Rhythm & Blues of the Pruitt-Igoe Projects of St. Louis, nurtured in the Blues and Gospel of his teen years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ashford Gordon bears the standard for Contemporary Blues with a pedigree for the deep Blues of his birthplace in Starkville, Mississippi. Living on his grandparents' 100 acre dairy farm without plumbing or heat, it's no surprise that music was no where to be found.
It wasn't until moving to St. Louis as a youth at his small Catholic parish school that it was discovered the young lad could sing. As he grew up, the sounds of Little Walter Jacobs, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry streamed into the Gordon home daily, prompting him to pick up the guitar and eventually shaping what would become his style. After a few years his father relocated the family to the San Francisco Bay Area. It was there that his gospel music education from church gave way to the power of the Blues.
Ashford founded his first blues band in 1992 and he's never looked back. After a long musical journey up and down both Coasts he found himself returning to Northern California and ultimately set up shop in Ventura, Ca. just northwest of Los Angeles.
Since then he's released a number of CD's including 1996's "Nothin' But Trouble" and "Somewhere Down the Line" in 2000. His gigs have included notable clubs and stages all over including the Monterey Blues Festival. Along the way he's shared the spotlight with such notables as his mentor, Louisiana "Guitar" Red and Eric Burdon. At one point Jackie Lomax, often referred to as the "fifth Beatle" and the first artist at the time to sign with Apple Records, played guitar in Ashford's band for 3 years.
His new band consists of nationally known veteran players who over the years have acquired a boatload of stage, studio and road time.
They are Michael Katnic on Keys and Vocals, Lewy Stix on Drums, and Don "Dial M for Bass" Miller on Bass Guitar.
