Human beings are born on the cusp between sublimity and savagery, between the metaphors of God and the fallen angel. With the support of community we can come to see creation as good and live to raise our lanterns, or we can fall into the darkness, the alienated individualism and life-negation of defensive ego. We can grovel among the thorns for psychological safety, or we can rise with the birds of the air to know the higher things. Our choice will be our future.
Therefore, "sin" is herein understood as the prefrontal cortex's acceptance of its complicity in the ego-complex as the identity of self, rather than the inner sensibilities of heart; it is dying to the spirit within for the sake of advantage in the world without.
But the ego-mind cannot dwell on the possibility of its sinfulness lest it perish. To the ego-complex self examination is anathema; self doubt virtual death; humility self-abnegation. Ego must dominate with self-assurance, and defend with indignation. Nor will ego rock the boat to which its interest is lashed. No principle compels the relaxation or renunciation of interest; no transcendence above and beyond the individual self constrains the will of ego. Expedience on behalf of interest is the guide of ego, not principle that may impose compromise—or worse yet, justice.
It takes courage to follow heart when the mind is ruled by fear. The ego-complex desires superiority and advantage because it needs them to feel safe—that is not strength, but weakness; not superiority, but pathology; not individuality, but a conformed prostration to the ideology of selfishness; not an expression of freedom, but a compulsive submission to fear.
We are not yet done with the berating of selfish ego, for the ego-complex is central to all the contentions in this text. But for the moment these are some conclusions upon the selfish ego:
Ego is the author of all presumptions of dominance: male superiority, racial superiority, class superiority… and the condescending attitudes of arrogance, impatience and dismissal.
Ego is the domestic abuser who must enforce the domination and control upon which its self-worth and sense of entitlement depend.
Ego persecutes the differences that challenge its authority and self-assurance… those ideas and beliefs and behaviors which threaten the defensive borders of ego's security.
Ego is what plots and contrives in the darkness of secrecy, and dissembles in the light of revelation.
Ego is the injustice that takes from others to secure itself.
Ego is what does not trust, and does not forgive.
Ego is what burns books.
