AN AWARENESS:

>The self fragmented into a collection of desires, fears, emotions, impulses and drives(expressed and submerged)--a constant stream which generates the great flux called the personality. Feeding and sustaining these varied structures of the personality is the mind. The mind is thus an ocean of food, a living environment that nourishes the personality. It is an ocean of astral energy surrounding the personality.



>A moment to moment awareness of the contents fo this stream of thoughts helps us excercise great control over the personality. In time, we can even dismantle the personality, releasing astral energy tied down as so many modifications. Once this is accomplished we can experience the Self. Releasing this astral energy is the fuel necessary to propel the being to freedom.



>People normally identify themselves with thoughts and memories. To them, this is selfhood--the real being. So stopping thoughts and eliminating the personality is to invite death itself. Thinking and memory are described as signs of active personality and not the being itself. The personality sustains itself by engorging upon astral energy. It mutates under the impact of experiences and with memories that are altered with time. But the being behind the personality is beyond change, unruffled by phenomena.



>By consciously focusing awareness it is possible to slow down thought processes, enabling us to exercise control over the personality's consumption of astral energy. The gradual slowing down of conscious thought processes allows us to embrace each moment. This process arrests the fragmentation of astral energy that is dispersed in order to sustain the voracious appetites of the numerous drives, motives, various thought-drifts and thought-forms, a coherent ensemble of which is the personality. This brings to halt the stream of thoughts that define the personality. The result is pure, undifferentiated awareness with out modification. In time, we learn to sustain this pure awareness by feeding it astral energy bound within thought-drifts, helping to further whittle away the personality.
