Whether Ashton is singing Jazz, R&B, Classical, or Rock and Roll, he does so with deep resonance and wit. He has a healthy respect for tradition, but takes great delight in discovering new musical paths.
Born and raised in Detroit, Ashton comes from a very musical family, his father a well known classical tenor. In grade school and high school (Cass Tech)he studied, piano, violin, percussion and voice, singing in choirs in school and chuch. His high school vocal quartet, Simply Complex, performed at the Fox Theater as part of the Evening of Fine Arts Showcase. At the end of his Senior year in High School, Ashton was offered a full scholarship to the Jazz Studies Program at Michigan State University.
Ashton graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Jazz Studies. His four years of study offered great musical growth, learning jazz styles and improvisation. During this time, Ashton began performing professionally, singing concerts and clubs, gaining valuable experience at every turn.
Ashton is now a Masters Student at MSU in Jazz Studies, a Teaching Assistant and director of Vocal Jazz Ensemble 2.
He has had the opportunity to sing with jazz greats such as Jon Hendricks, Wycliff Gordon, Rodney Whitaker, Ursala Walker, and Buddy Budson and has been cliniced by Mark Murphy. In November of 2004 Ashton performed a concert McGreggor Auditiorium to a full house of appreciative listeners. He has been the featured singer with MSU Jazz Band One for numerous concerts at Wharton Center and around the state.
Ashton is just beginning his career as a jazz singer, but is already singing with the passion and ability of seasoned professional. Keep your eye on him. With his love of the music and his enormous talent, he is bound to go far.
