For Amália aficionados...

With much assistance from Wikipedia:

The Paris Olympia was founded in 1888 by Joseph Oller, the creator of the Moulin Rouge. The Olympia is the oldest music hall in Paris and one of the most famous music halls in the world. Today it is easily recognizable by its giant red glowing letters announcing its famous name. It opened in 1889 as the "Montagnes Russes" but in 1893 was renamed the Olympia, as it remains to this day.

Beyond musicians, the Olympia has played host to a variety of entertainment including circuses, ballets, and operettas. However, following a steady decline in appearances by the great stars, from 1929 until 1944, it served as a movie theatre. It may have opened as a music hall under the German occupation of France during World War II, but certainly in 1945 after the Liberation, it was again a music hall free to Allied troops in uniform. But attendees had to listen to the playing of four national anthems before the varied programs, and that always ended with a spirited French can-can performed by dancers, some of whom reputedly were no longer young. (Yes, as if fighting for France's liberation was not enough.)

Thereafter however, at times it may have reverted to movies again until Bruno Coquatrix (1910 - 1979), a French songwriter and music impresario managed to gain ownership of the famous building -- would make an interesting documentary, no? -- and revived it as a music hall with a grand re-opening in February 1954. (Amália aficionados note that she performed there to a rousing reception in 1956.) After purchasing the Olympia, Coquatrix was instrumental in recognizing and exposing the talent of up-and-coming performers, so he brought many international stars to Parisian audiences. But after his death in 1979, the Olympia ultimately went into another decline and was this time in danger of being torn down and turned into a parking lot, yet as if by divine intervention, 100 years to the day almost of it being renamed the Olympia (1893), on 7 January 1993, its saviour would fittingly be France's then Minister of Culture, Jack Lang who issued a preservation order that resulted in two years of construction work to rebuild a perfect replica of the façade, and restore to its original grandeur its famous red interior.

Of course Édith Piaf also achieved great fame at the Olympia giving several series of recitals from January 1955 until October 1962. Jeff Buckley, long an admirer of Piaf, gave what he considered the finest performance of his career there in 1995, which was later released in 2001 on Live at L'Olympia.

And Jacques Brel's 1961 and 1964 concerts at L'Olympia are legendary and preserved to this day on new CD releases.

The venue has showcased a wide variety of performers, from French acts like Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Bécaud, Petula Clark, Johnny Hallyday, Joséphine Baker and Yvonne Printemps to international stars like Willy DeVille, Amália Rodrigues, Bülent Ersoy, Can, Céline Dion, Diana Krall, Dir en grey, Fairuz, Jeff Buckley, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, Lola Beltran, Luciano Pavarotti, Mariza, Morrissey, The Shadows, My Bloody Valentine, Nelly Furtado, New Order, Nick Cave, Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Primal Scream, Stevie Nicks, The Beatles, The Cure, The Jackson 5, The Mars Volta, Otis Redding, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, Tereza Kesovija, Tony Carreira, Umm Kulthum, Dionne Warwick, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground.
