When the Broken Bow is a Portland-‐based trio fronted by singer/pianist Ali Ippolito. Armed with strong classical & ragtime roots and a sensitivity to her world within & without, Ali writes songs in response
to memories, realizations, hopes, and social & political
awakenings.
WBB has been in its current arrangement of piano, bass & drums for a few years; prior to that, Ali had been performing solo since her move from NY in 2000. She has also performed & recorded extensively with various musical projects in Portland over the years, including Heroes & Villains & Nick Jaina. Justin Stimson (bass) & Quentin Whitman (drums) are both Oregon natives, and their musical influences & endeavors are widespread & ever-expanding.
WBB's debut album, We, the Dangerous Weapons, as a whole is dynamic, lyrical, contemplative & powerful, with a sincerity put forth only by one who wears their heart on their sleeve. It has been a long time coming, & the band is very proud to be releasing it into the world. They hope & wish for each listener to take something meaningful & constructive away from it.
"Her simmering music–as captivating as Tom Waits' universe of tattooed,angel-headed sinners and hipster saints, Carlos Gardel's tango-longing or Edith Piaf's fragile lyric ache– to paraphrase the poet Mina Loy, 'infects us with unendurable ease/touching nerve-terminals.' That's a good thing"
(published in First Thursday, arts, community, portland, sometimes a great notion)
