Alexis Strum is a singer- songwriter with a personality. Described in

the press as "The Scissor Sisters' UK cousin", she is neither

whimsical, nor introverted. Alexis writes songs which document love as

if she were your best (single) mate. Put it this way, only androids

would fail to be touched by her experience.

Taking her inspiration from the recently-resurfaced songstress, Kate

Bush, Alexis is more than just your average voice

on legs, having produced the majority of her debut album, 'Cocoon', in

her bedroom studio. In fact, due to a severely 'bad haircut' (as

referenced in her first single) she hid herself away for three months

listening to Kate, Damien Rice and the Scissor Sisters and studiously

(and perhaps vainly) didn't leave the house until she was done. No drum

left unquantized, she emerged with twelve perfect songs. Cue massive bidding war followed by a deal with Mercury Records.

Fresh from performances at this year's V and Wireless festivals, and

having supported artists from right across the musical spectrum - from Brendon Benson to Charlotte Church - Alexis has spent much of 2005 building up to the release of 'Cocoon', due early in the new year.

And some album it promises to be too. Described by the Daily Star as

containing 'hits a-plenty,' Music Week confidently concluded; 'don't be

surprised to find this among the Mercury nominations for 2006.'

Sonically speaking, an Alexis Strum song is a semi-acoustic affair with

leftfield beats and sparkly synths. She has been described as falling

somewhere between the aforementioned Kate Bush, the Scissor Sisters and

the best moments of Phil Spector's songbook - clearly not a bad place

to be, and we're obviously not the only ones to think this

way; Witness both Kylie and Rachel Stevens rushing to cut Alexis' songs

for their most recent albums (check out 'Still Standing' and 'Nothing Good

About This Goodbye', respectively).

As for her own songs, introductory single 'Bad Haircut' playfully

likens the finale of a doomed relationship to a disastrous barnet, all tied-up in

Alexis' own distinct brand of quirky, left-field pop.

Forthcoming single 'It Could Be You' is produced by the force behind

Will Young's "Leave Right Now", Steve Lipson, and reveals a vulnerable

Alexis wondering if she has found 'The One.' Comfortably enwrapped

in lush orchestration, and co-written with legendary lyricist Billy Steinberg,

(writer of "Eternal Flame' and 'I Drove All Night'), the song looks set to propel Alexis into the pop stratosphere.

or dip into her never-a-dull-minute world by reading her hilarious

exclusive blog for Popjustice, (Goldfrapp and The Scissor Sisters'

website of choice), at popjustice.co.uk/alexis. Meanwhile, look out for

Alexis Strum at venues in and around the London area over the remainder of the year.
