It's not often you come across musicians who can poetically articulate weighty societal issues and generate magnetic hooks simultaneously. CIVILIAN has created a simple formula to do just that: they sing about things that matter and make great music. This approach has become part of their charm and has gained the emerging indie-rock sensation a coveted spot at the inaugural 2011 Orlando Calling Festival, the title of Broward-Palm Beach New Times' "Best Rock Band" of 2011 and a passionate, growing following.
What started as the brainchild of Fort Lauderdale's Ryan Alexander (vocals/guitar) in 2006 has since evolved into a dynamic four piece with Alex Bennett (vocals, guitar) and brothers Nick (bass) and Nash Nardone (drums). Their upcoming LP, "SHOULD THIS NOOSE UNLOOSEN," produced by Dan Hannon (Manchester Orchestra, A Rocket to the Moon) and mastered by T.W. Walsh (Sufjan Stevens, Pedro the Lion, Cold War Kids, David Bazan) is set to debut on May 15, 2012. The unreleased record has already been tapped by the major motion picture "Renee," starring Kat Dennings, Chad Michael Murray and Rupert Friend. Civilian's track "Don't Lose Heart" will be featured on the film's soundtrack alongside Travie McCoy, Paper Route and Ryan Gosling's band Dean Man's Bones.
With a vocally intensive and rhythmically complex sound,
Civilian has become a must-see Florida act. Not only have they shared the stage with big names like Dashboard Confessional, Charlie Hall, Cool Hand Luke and Ascend The Hill, but their music has also been featured in over 60 TV placements including MTV and VH1's The Real World, Real World vs. Road Rules, Jersey Shore, Secrets of Aspen, Bad Girls Club and Tough Love.
Beyond their infectious hooks and seamless live performances, the gentlemen of Civilian use their platform to deliver well-crafted messages that command audiences' attention. With a storytelling vibe, Civilian's conversational songwriting creatively reflects their candid thoughts on politics, spirituality and justice. Civilian describes the gravity of their lyrical content as "dark songs masked in happy rock n' roll." More than simply words, their music mirrors each member's dedication to caring for the oppressed, giving to the less fortunate, and loving the unloved. It is no wonder front-man Ryan Alexander was also awarded New Times' 2011 "Best Young Guy."
