The Black Apples

/

So they’ve got the golden-era feel, if not the golden-era finances. It’s the hard psyche of bands such as 13th Floor Elevators, the Litter or the Pretty Things (whose S.F. Sorrow LP is one every member of Black Apples owns, Scarborough says) captured, expertly analyzed and released back into the wild. With Black Apples, three or four chords sprout feathers and spikes and spots and stingers, thanks to the successfully processed lessons of bed-rockers such as Hendrix, the Beatles and the post-Altamont Stones, who ably demonstrated just how far out a band could go.They’ve resurrected several earlier tracks to fill out what will be a new LP for LA’s independent label Albino Crow

Dante Vs. Zombies

albinocrowmusic will be releasing Dante Vs. Zombies debut single 'Yes, I'm Stalking You' - this summer - get ready, world

Vum

From under the left wing of Lion Fever and through Everlovely Lightningheart’s third temple of Grand Elegance comes VUM. Not an acronym but two humans, and their infinite accompaniment by the celestial bodies above. Here comes the Rhodes, and the Reverb in reverent ode to yesterday’s Tropical-Suicide-Creatures. Their first release, Strange Attractor, appeared on the legendary cassette label Living Tapes. Coming up in January 2010, with love from the dust bowl, an extended CD version of Strange Attractor on the infamously-Angelino label Albino Crow. This bird has more feathers. Now try to catch it before it’s gone.

Dalmacio Von Diamond & The Enochian Keys

Better known these days under the moniker of his full band THE ENOCHIAN KEYS, Dalmacio Von Diamond (risen from the acclaimed ashes of the infamous HOLY CURTAIN) has been boot-burning, teetering precariously on Southern Californian ramshackle stages for well over two years into his lidless rollick. An audacious, take-no prisoners theatrically-bent take on classic dark, crooning rock has arrived and demanded attention in an almost time-out-of-place fashion you simply do not see in these intimate of atmospheres…These “minor chord mini-dramas” Dalmacio has penned and orchestrated with his trench-coated hentchmen seem to somehow actually drop the temperature in the room -whether in synch with the record needle or with the audiences stomping feet – creating a panicked, aural landscape of fragmented cautions and confessions, having as much in common with the laments of Scott Walker as it does with the intents of Depeche Mode.

Essentially a solo effort, “The Other Side Of Darkness” is Dal’s masterfully self-produced debut, showing a more stripped down version of songs you will see the 6-piece ENOCHIAN KEYS set all these ocean-air eroded stages on fire with. The album’s unarguable anthem “I Don’t Want To Be Young Anymore” stands out from the brooding rest as a classic end-of-the-night drinking song, building up from each woozy yet literate verse into the over-the-top schizo fuck-it cry of total abandon…”LA LA LA LA LA! LA LA LA LA LA!!!” that might have made a less elusive Jack The Ripper proud. But for these modern turbulent times the pleasure is all ours…

Jail Weddings

Standing alone as the world’s only 10-piece modern-day Wall Of Sound “death-doo wop” soul-stricken rock n’ roll behemoth, JAIL WEDDINGS first splayed open their guts through these very sessions captured first on their self-released “Somebody Lonely” 7” (out of print), then quickly followed by their Albino Crow single “The Spell Has Lifted” b/w “People Like Us (Are Extinct)”. Recorded in November 2007 at the infamous all-analog fortress The Distillery, this was a head-first experiment for the band on how to cram all the layers of their pandemonium-peaked live shows into what should come across as more streamlined, classic 2:30 pop song. After two days of grueling trial- by-fire tracking peppered with various tear-soaked tantrums, then another 2 days of hair-pulling mixing, results we’re thankfully victorious.

While the first pair of songs released to the world showed the band as bit more upbeat, almost romantic party band, the darker subsequent “The Spell Has Lifted” b/w “People Like Us (Are Extinct)” single was a far more tell-tale vibe of the group at that particular time – cantankerous, precarious, piss and vinegar saliva-dripping that seems to come right through the speakers on front man Gabriel Hart and (the since dismissed backing vocalist) Tornado Jane’s duet “The Spell…”, the group’s Los Angeles love/hate kiss off. Things get even more personal on the b-side for “People Like Us (Are Extinct)” another insular anthem for Jail Weddings ABOUT Jail Weddings written by Gabriel when he smirkingly realized that the monster he had created was now towering over him…For fans of THE SHANGRI-LA’s, THE FLESHEATERS, X, MISFITS, and THE MAMAS AND PAPAS.

Flowers & Bulls

The ever elusive Danielle Flores is Flowers And Bulls. While an initial listen to her debut Albino Crow single “A Traveling Circus” b/w “ Song With No Name” might bewilder some that know her more wild barfly side, these fragile, narcotic lullabies end up being the perfect companions to come down easy with after any night of revelry. A far more rustic Mazzy Star might come to mind quickly during the first minute or so, but then a whole new miniature music box tenderness unfolds – a syrupy voice weaving through fragmented vibrato and weird field-noise masquerading as devil-may-care imperfection but by the end it is what makes it stand out from any other contemporary female mutant folk of this ilk.

Distinctly recorded by the haunted cave-like Midus touch of Greg Ashley of The Gris Gris, Dutchess And The Duke (he also plays drums on this recording), the match couldn’t have been more heavenly. Chris from Silver Jews plays piano on this as well – not to get “all-star” about a recording this gorgeously minimal…the songs themselves need no further persuasion.
