Australian-born Alanna Cherote comes from one of those large musical families that are rare to find these days. She is the eldest of 5 children and grew up surrounded by music and musical instruments.
Raised in a family of diverse cultures; Alanna inherited a passion for the eclectic at an early age – an element that runs through her work as both a songwriter and a vocalist.
Growing up in a house with 4 younger siblings, Alanna needed an "escape" and for her it was music. At home she would search through hundreds of her parent's records, listening to the craftsmanship of early Paul McCartney material and the likes of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. She was also inspired by African/American jazz and blues, and it was Alanna's mother who introduced her to female artists like Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin, which left an indelible impression on her.
"When I heard Janis Joplin sing for the very first time, I knew that a little bit of my destiny had changed. I always dreamt about searching deep within myself as a writer, to find that connection that I had seen between Janis and her fans," says Alanna.
Three years ago, local media described her as a "soon to be discovered gem", but for Alanna Cherote, spreading her wings to the far side of the globe was where she would find her sweet spot. With record deals in Canada and Australia, a lucrative publishing contract, international performances in the United Kingdom, and Europe, this once wide-eyed teen from Sydney's southern highlands has gone on to become a breezy pop/folk singer-songwriter with an international following.
Her debut album 'Paper Flower' was released in Canada in 2011 through Sparks Music and distributed via EMI Music Canada. Shortly thereafter it was launched in Australia and New Zealand through independent label Other Tongues. The album was co-produced with Chris Vallejo in Australia and has stolen the hearts of Canadian and Australian music listeners and critics alike.
After spending time performing, filming and engaging fans in Montreal and Toronto, Alanna played Canadian Music Week in March 2011 where her determination to win Canada over paid off. Prominent Radio Host Alan Cross rated '(Make Me Do) Anything You Want', an exclusive track for the Canadian release as #1 on his well-known music chart, "The List". Her catchy single 'Street Girls' was named Explore Music's "Indie Track of The Day". Adding to the affirmation was CBC Radio's Mark Rheaume who expressed, "Music reviewers who deal with hundreds of recordings a year know that very few releases offer more than a handful of outstanding tracks. In defiance of the math, Alanna Cherote's 'Paper Flower' offers one glorious tune after another".
Alanna is currently writing material for her new album and as part of that process will be travelling to L.A. this April to co-write with both American and Canadian songwriters.
