Tucked away in a self-made, fully functional basement studio beneath the treacherous streets on Flint, Michigan is where an artist who, until now, has gone as one of hip-hops best kept secrets. In a time where it seems every other artist requires you to lean and rock or snap your fingers, Ah-mayz MacSon just wants you to listen, I make headphone music. A true fan of hip-hop since forever, MacSon will tell anyone that will listen; he is a true student of hip-hop and music in general. It is this passion that drove Ah-mayz to dig deeper into music. It started when I was a shorty, recalls Ah-mayz. I used to hustle bottles to the store for money. I didnt buy candy or toys. I was buying tapes, cds, magazines, posters, and whatever else. Often he could be found with a pen and pad, breaking down albums from his favorite artists Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Rakim, Ice Cube, and many others. Observing everything from lyrical content and ability, production styles even down to the albums arrangement and song titles. Ah-mayz was unknowingly absorbing the valuable knowledge from the MCs of hip-hop Golden era, all the while honing his craft. By the time he decided to create music of his own it poured from him naturally.
Its been a long time coming for Ah-mayz and his Electric Company Entertainment (E.C.E.) label, but it hasnt been time wasted. I got so many songs, man I stopped counting. Ive just been using the time to focus and try to become perfect. Word Perfect.
A rear rare and often conflicting mixture of conscious, uplifting lyrics coupled with and unflinching view at the parralls of everyday life in one of Americas most notorious cities, Ahmayz is posed to shock and refresh today rap audience with his first official release The Big Idea (Word perfect, a 13 song effective, sold out the truck in 2002, was well received, and has a large underground following) on E.C.E/ S & S Entertainment.
On tracks like Rise N Shine, Ahmayz encourages listeners to wake up and grind everyday like its the last. He spits Bling/ Ooch/ I Got Some News to Announce/ Tryna Make a Million Dollars, Aint Gone Find It in Ya Couch. On the syrupy banger, U Can Do It 2, Ahmayz explains to the growing number of future MCs about never giving up on a dream deferred. I know it seems these days everybody want to rap/ but hip hop stands for hope and who can take away from that. I had to talk to the little ones out there cause they are up next. No one ever talked to us about being MCs. I just want them to know its real. You can do anything you want, explains Ahmayz. Ya Favorite Rapper find Ahmayz campaigning to be the ladies MC of choice. I know you got a boyfriend, he can keep his role/ Just keep my posters in ya room girl, its room for us both. But its on Talking 2 You, perhaps the album most engaging cut that Ahmayz lyrical reaches through the speakers and taps the listeners on the shoulders. No joke indeed, Ahmayz embodies all that an artist should be creative, passionate, confident, and aware with a voice best described as smothering. Macson sends us back to a time when it was about the MC and the Mic. One person with something to say and unfazed by the doves of others following others. With a hunger for more in the belly and mind it is safe to say the aforementioned Kept Secret is in serious jeopardy of becoming public knowledge. Thats an idea that sits just fine with Ahmayz, who knows all will shine in due time. And when that day comes, it will be simply Ahmayzing.
