Recently, mainstream music has been deteriorating at an extremely rapid pace. This is not an opinion, it is a fact. When you turn on the radio, what are the chances of you hearing a song that gives you the chills? How many songs have you heard lately that have put a smile on your face? The music industry is in a sad state right now, and if you haven't yet noticed, you haven't been paying attention.

The members of Tampa, FL quintet Broken Self have been paying attention, and they have decided to do something about it. Broken Self's mission is to change the music industry for the better. To put an end to this epidemic of crappy music and to bring good music to the radio and back into our lives. This may seem like a lofty goal, but with your support, the band has the potential to accomplish this feat.

Broken Self's formula for writing songs is as follows: Blend 1 part catchy with 1 part heavy and 1 part inventive. Although it is a fairly simple formula, it is difficult to get it just right. Each song's goal is to get stuck in your head, rock your socks off, and surprise you with the unexpected, and the recently released self-titled EP proves to accomplish all this with ease. "The Oedipus Complex" kicks off the sonic journey with its epic feel and face melting guitar solos by Scott Galarza and Will Moore. The instrumentation perfectly supports Bonnie Newman's gripping lyrics to bring the classic story of "Oedipus Rex" to life. Next, "Phoenix" grabs you by the balls, exploding with powerful guitar riffs and energetic drum patterns of James Ferrell, while telling the story of a long-distance romance. The upbeat "Getting Away From You" meshes the band's punk roots with catchy melodies and tasty guitar harmonies. Then, "Unwanted" brings it down with the soulful and funky bass lines of Virgil Wheeler only to pick it back up again; the fluctuating dynamics work together with the lyrics to convey the feeling of a tumultuous relationship between mother and daughter. Finally, "Crash Landing" brings the ride to an explosive finish with its dual guitar parts and frantic shouts interwoven with melodic vocals.

The 5-song EP also includes a bonus acoustic version of "The Oedipus Complex". It will soon be available here through Paypal below and through CDBaby.com, or digitally downloadable through digstation.com and iTunes.
