45 GRAVE is Back! Dinah Cancer's 45 GRAVE is a bubbling mix of Old School Punk Rock, Metal, Goth and Death Rock and Surf Rock in a cauldron of musical potion!45 Grave are noted as one of the first bands to mix punk rock with horror-themed lyrics, thereby positioning them as progenitors of the horror punk subgenre. Their unique appearance and morbid theatricality also distinguished them as innovators of Gothic Rock as well as "Deathrock," a term used to identify a subgenre of punk rock incorporating horror elements and spooky atmospherics. 45 GRAVE was born in the chaos of the L.A. Punk movement and churned out their own brand of Ghoul Rock. The original lineup consisted of Dinah Cancer-Vocals, Paul Cutler-guitar, Rob Graves-bass, and Don Bolles-drums.
In 1980, 45 Grave recorded their first song, "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood", a song originally done by "Don Hinson and the Rigamorticians" on their 1964 album release "Monster Dance Party". Early on, the band were playing The Consumers songs that Cutler had written, with lyrics changed to fit Cancer's singing style. They then wrote the songs that would be released on their first 7", "Black Cross", which featured Pat Smear of The Germs on guitar, and a fast paced punk song called "Party Time"."Partytime (Zombie Version)" made it onto the movie sound track for "RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD" and was on regular rotation on MTV in 1984. Another song, "Evil", made its debut on MTV's The Cutting Edge in 1985. Appearing on many a teenagers' wall or locker, Dinah was slated as 'The Queen of Punk and Deathrock' by many fan rags, and became the ultimate horror punk pinup girl.During the first wave of the L.A. punk scene, 45 Grave shared the stage with artists like The Ramones, Specimen, The Damned, The Misfits, The Cramps, and Black Flag. The original band broke up in 1985, playing sporadically until Rob Graves' death in 1991. In 2004, Dinah Cancer revived 45 Grave and began touring with various players. The current lineup features Orange County Punk Icon FRANK AGNEW (the Adolescents, TSOL, Social Distortion) on guitar!Agnew brings the band closer to the classic sound of the Paul Cutler/Rob Graves era. A highly gifted and melodic player, Agnew is far and away the best guitarist 45 Grave has had since Dinah Cancer reformed the band in 2004. His traditional approach to the classic 45 Grave songs such as "Party Time" and "Black Cross" have won rave reviews at the bands first few shows with him. The lineup is flushed out with an explosive rhythm section consisting of LA Goth rock mainstay Tom Coyne on drums (The Last Dance, Frankenstein) and new addition Brannden Blackwell on bass.In 2010, 45 Grave wrote the title track for the movie "Night of the Demons", a remake of the classic 1984 cult horror film. A soundtrack CD including Concrete Blonde and Type O Negative will be released in 2011.45 Grave hopes to put out an EP in 2011, featuring the new lineup and some of the new songs they are currently playing onstage. Fans can expect more of that Punk/Metal/Goth/Surf/Death rock potion that Dinah Cancer has been brewing since she first sang about Riboflavin Blood all those years ago.
