Soul Majestic’s career spans far and wide, from playing small clubs and house parties to festivals, large arena’s and venues throughout North America. Since their start on college radio in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001 their music has been played on the radio throughout the world including XM Satellite Radio where their hit songs Better World and Rough N’ Tuff were in heavy rotation for over 6 months. While becoming a household name with the reggae audience, they have also managed to attract many fans that don’t typically gravitate to the genre. Infusing their varied musical influences, from Rock to R&B, Folk to Reggae, their song writing and sound have proven timeless. And don’t be fooled by their eclectic nature: the band’s drive to keep the reggae authenticity has even reggae purists’ approval. Soul Majestic has fostered a passionate fan base that will travel to see the band play.
To describe their live show: first imagine both male and female lead vocals interweaving over steady, thumping bass and drums, textural, bubbling organs and keyboards, with sweet yet gritty lead guitar licks and innovative, tasty percussion overlay--occasionally mixing in the sizzling sounds of brass. Add to that a well-crafted set of songs with messages of community, self-worth, struggle, joy, action and love--sonically ranging from massive beat-based sound to sensitive ballads. A Soul Majestic concert in a nutshell: unique and sincere songwriting, soul-shaking reggae grooves, and a spontaneous, uplifting, and crowd interactive stage show.
Discography: Soul Majestic’s self-titled debut album, released in 2002, was followed up in 2004 with a full band exodus to the birthplace of reggae and origin of the reggae genre, the island of Jamaica. While there, they recorded their second album, entitled Until That Day, at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studio in Kingston, enlisting the involvement of some of their heroes like Sly and Robbie and Anthony B. In July of 2009, their third and highly anticipated album entitled Better World was released featuring 13 diverse tracks including collaborations with Sly and Robbie, Tony Moses and Trinidad’s Queen Omega, as well as production and a handful of rhythms by Million 7 Sound. Their most innovative work to date, Better World quickly gained notice and was placed in rotation on reggae radio programs worldwide, playing on radio as far off as the Philippines, Portugal, and Europe. Better World was listed on the Top 10 international reggae albums of 2009 by Galaxy radio in Canada.
What’s new: following up their recent track “Medical Condition [215]” (which is now available on iTunes and accompanied by a music video which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/soulmajestic), the band will be releasing a handful of singles throughout the year, eventually compiling them with a new batch of un-released material into an album.
Moving forward: whether touring the country in their 15-passenger Bio-diesel tour van or writing and recording new material in the studio, the band’s mission to raise awareness of global interconnectedness, and how people’s actions impact one another and the earth will remain in the forefront. Joining together with organizations aligned to their mission and world-views, and continuing to focus on sustainability and family will be paramount to Soul Majestic’s forward movements.
